James Gunn doubles down on the 'Superman' heritage twist and confirms it will not be retconned

"I am a big Superman fan. I don't want to change important, integral things.. his goodness of heart, the fact that he won't kill, the fact that he's in love with Lois Lane, even the curl on the head.. so the question is, 'what can you add to the mythos that's a little bit different, that doesn't really essentially change who the character is..'"

"I think it works. It is not something that is going to be retrofitted in the future. It is the fact of Superman's life"

So unnecessary and doesn’t add anything, just takes away from the mythos

with Marisa Abela, Adria Arjona and Ella Purnell beginning to test last week, multiple sources tell Deadline.

We’re told the character is Maxima, the warrior queen from the planet Almerac

Now that is interesting since Arjona has been talked about for Wonder Woman for months now. Would this be a way to test for Wonder Woman as well without having it leak to press that she's testing and not have a cover story for it?

I get they can be testing for Maxima as well, but seems like WW casting could be concurrent

Maxima
That's a fun character. After seeing her episode on Superman: The Animated Series, I'm wondering if Lobo will make a cameo appearance.

I loved when Robot Chicken made fun of Lex's battle suit not having anything to protect his head.

I love Ella Purnell and think she's a great actress, but it's hard to see her as Maxima.

I could be wrong, of course, but Maxima is a warrior queen who's main motivation in Superman stories, initially, was to mate with him; eventually she makes it to Earth and joins the JLA for a brief time.

She also fought Doomsday the first time he showed up; aside from Superman, she is the one who holds her own the best against him.

Deadline has updated and it looks like it's just Adria testing for it

Editors Note: Deadline went through its normal editorial process in the newsgathering for this story. After a review in light of new information regarding the actors involved, the story is currently being updated.

EXCLUSIVE: James Gunn is zeroing in on his choice for another key role in the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, with Adria Arjona among those beginning to test last week, multiple sources tell Deadline.

Surprising. Looked the character up and she’s a redhead?
