I think film critics do tend to judge summer blockbusters by the same standard as Academy Award contenders and are also growing tired of comic book films. There is also a disconnect between audiences just looking to be entertained for a couple hours and critics who are looking for a well made film. I think a movie can be utter cheap but as long as it is marginally coherent and provides eye candy, I feel like most audiences will have a good time even if the film is not objectively good.
This was a fun movie but it didn't follow any traditional movie structure. I'm sure that was a huge turn-off for the critics. Warner edited it like a sporting event, with a rundown of all of the players in a pre-game show and then jumped right into game itself. Once the critics were in that "WTF?" mode from seeing how the movie was built, the performances didn't make up the difference for them.

Massive disparity there. Hell we even see that on this board.
You have the people like me who just want to watch a movie and be entertained, which is what the masses are.
Then you have the people that won't even use the word "movie" They watch "films" and pick every little detail apart.

This should be irrelevant when reviewing a film. I know these movies aren't perfect, but damn, no one is asking them to be what these critics are chastising them for not being.
There are a lot of people who really enjoy comic book movies, because we grew up in these imaginary worlds. For film critics to shite all over an entire genre just because they're tired of watching it, is the epitome of the pseudo-elite-ism that these guys see themselves as.
I would rather watch BvS or SS over the past 15 AA best picture winners, and I know that the great majority of folks feel the same way I do.

You've chosen two extremely mediocre movies to champion over the likes of the departed and no country for old men.

Last 15 AA best picture movies, for reference:
Spotlight
Birdman
12 Years a Slave
Argo
The Artist
The King's Speech
The Hurt Locker
Slumdog Millionaire
No Country for Old Men
The Departed
Crash
Million Dollar Baby
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Chicago
A Beautiful Mind
Nearly every one of those movies is better and more rewatchable than the crap that was BvS and SS.

Dr. Strange, Wonder Woman, GotG2, Thor 3, Black Panther, Justice League, Avengers Infinity War all will be coming out in the next few years and will draw hundreds of millions of dollars regardless of any criticism or poor reviews.
People can talk about comic book fatigue all they want but we have proven to be extremely loyal and willing to spend.

These are the only two that I might watch instead of one of the new DC movies. Seriously. Most people enjoy the popcorn fare more than they do movies that follow an Oscar-winning formula.

quote:I agree, if we're talking good comic book movie vs AA best picture winner. But since we're talking BvS and SS, I don't think most people would rather watch that than the past 15 AA winners.

I understand the point you are making, I just don't agree with you with regards to BvS and SS. Would the majority of people rather watch good popcorn fare than Oscar-bait stuff, sure. But neither Bvs or SS are good popcorn fare. I mean SS big action scenes involved some of the most easily killed expendables I've ever seen. Then after watching Harley freaking Quinn disintegrate these things by hitting them with a bat, the script calls for Waller to tell the audience how dangerous this created army is. An army of soldiers who can take a bullet to the head and still keep coming? Is that a joke, because the previous fight scene completely tells a different story.

Maybe not, but I would.

A lot of idiots defending the film simply because of the genre making it excusable to have basic plot and scene writing shite shows.

are you being serious? Because I'd venture to say this is the exact opposite. BvS and SS were both straight up bad movies.

I wasn't that upset over BvS...of course, I'm not married to the Superman storyline because it's so absurd. I thought it was good enough.
Posted on 8/8/16 at 12:39 pm to DupontsCircle
Good enough is fine. I personally thought it was just poorly done and lazy. To say most people would prefer it or SS over the last 15 AA winners is absurd, though.

I watched Spotlight and The Big Short yesterday afternoon/evening, and they were both so much better than BvS and SS that one would be hesitant to hold them up next to each other and even compare them as similar mediums.
