Suicide Squad (2016) was originally supposed to connect to Justice League

Suicide Squad director David Ayer recently responded to a comment on Twitter about the machine Cara Delevingne's Enchantress was building at the end of the film, revealing that originally it had been intended to sync up with Justice League.

"It was supposed to be a boom tube as she was under control of a motherbox," Ayer wrote.

Ayer continued: "All the Apokalypse elements were stripped out late in the game. The machine concept was an attempt to create a ticking clock and world threat."

Last year, Ayer revealed that his Suicide Squad was originally supposed to include DC villain Steppenwolf. Here's Ayer's tweet from 2018:

"This is right. Enchantress was under the control of a mother box and Steppenwolfe was prepping an invasion with a boom tube. Had to lose that then the JL story arcs evolved."

Regardless of what you think of Batman v. Superman, I firmly believe Warner Bros. made a mistake in making a course correction in midstream. Seems like Suicide Squad was straight arse due in part to all of the cuts they had to make after the film was already finished.

this is whats wrong with these stupid movies

it's like the only plots they can come up with revolve around these little gizmos and gadgets and doohickeys and stones and shite.

None of the Squad members were remotely interesting. Even if they had done better developing the characters, I would have had a hard time believing they could take on world threats as a team or serve as some kind of counter to a rogue Justice league. They should have gone the Deadpool route with smaller stakes to better flesh out the concept.

I'm the biggest DC defender on here (fan of Snyder's vision of the DCU). But, Suicide Squad was absolute crap. I'm not sure better/different editing could have saved it. Most of the characters were cardboard cutouts. And, you're right, their skillset never matched up to the stakes involved. They don't look like they could have successfully pulled off the Watergate break-in.
Complete trash movie.

There were so many problems with Suicide Squad that it would take me forever to list them but the cut of the jib is that WB didn’t have a plan nor did they have a HNIC of DC.

I mean it kind of does, because doesn’t Bruce ask for the files of the meta-humans at the end of the movie?

Suicide Squad is one the worst movies of any sort I’ve seen in the last ten years. The concept is obscenely stupid - in a world that has Superman, the Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, etc., when a superpowerful being threatens to destroy the planet, the US government’s only option is to turn to... a deranged female ex-psychologist with absolutely no powers at all? A guy who’s a really good shot? What use are they going to be? And that’s not even getting into the pathetically bad dialogue, horrific acting, and just... just... everything. Everything about that movie is awful. I turned it off midway through.

So no, a few cuts here and there wouldn’t have saved it, I don’t think.

Yeah I loved how lame their powers were. A super marksman. A 110lb chick with no powers. A guy who likes to climb things. A guy who throws boomerangs lol.
What a shitshow.

That kinda thing is going to be present in any shared universe I'm afraid. Where were the Avengers in Thor: The Dark World or in Iron Man 3? Why didn't they show up and help Steve Rodgers when SHIELD collapsed at the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier?

Yeah but this was next level stupid. Ok, so we didn’t know where the Avengers were in Winter Soldier. I can deal with that. But we still at least had Capt America. Suicide Squad was a bunch of underpowered retarded misfits. They weren’t heroes at all and some had no powers.

Yeah, but the Suicide Squad is not only less powerful than other heroes in the DC universe - they are less powerful than a similar number of Navy SEALs or even, shite, just a squad of Marines. You know, groups of people which the US government would have readily at hand. In fact, the Suicide Squad is not only demonstrably less capable than those groups, but they have the added disadvantage that you can never be sure they will actually follow orders or even attempt to carry out the mission at all because they are, as they like to remind us continually, bad guys. That’s supposed to be part of the “suspense” for us moviewatchers, but all it does is compound the stupidity factor by eleventy billion.

Most of Thor 2 took place off world, the only conflict that took place on earth was the less than hour of shenanigans in England and by the time he rallied the troops, time’s been up.

Tony was without a suit for most of IM3 and his deal was more of a personal matter. Besides he had Rhodes to help out.

And Rogers was busy doing his own thing with SHIELD with Natasha and dealing with the collapse of an agency like that isn’t really a world threatening level event. Again, rallying the troops for that would have taken longer than fixing the problem. Plus he brought Falcon into the fold.

And them not being around to help each other and leaving a huge mess of things after was fundamental to the story in Civil War which in turn was fundamental to them being separated in Infinity War.

What a shitshow.

Dont forget about alligator boy whose apparent usefulness is limited to swimming. Thank God he was on the team because that subway tunnel with the bomb just happened to be underwater.
