El is his daughter, he's doing his job as a parent by keeping a thumb on her.

Mike was also a disrespectful shite to him.

They both care for El though.

How about the entire mayor-Hopper scene?

Pic of Ronald Reagan on the wall before he goes into the office.

Just a coincidence the mayor has the same color and hairstyle as Trump, right?

And hes portrayed as an a-hole? NOT A COINCIDENCE.

And he has shady ties to Russia?

Mayor Kline's sign just happens to look a lot like Trump's sign?

I do believe some shows/movies obviously go down certain kinds of paths.

Stranger Things S3 is not one of them.

Why were russians on US soil opening up the gateway? It was shallow and not well thought IMO.

They tried opening a gateway in Russia. It failed. They realized that location was the other half of the equation. The gateway that had been opened previously in Hawkins was "still healing", and the dimensional activity that was still lingering in Hawkins was sufficient to allow them to reopen a new portal.

As to why they were doing any of this to begin with...it was probably the same reason the the US initiated the MKUltra program. To get a leg up in the Cold War.

The Russian guy clearly says "You're going to regret that little girl." The subtitles say "You're going to regret that little bitch."
I’m pretty sure he said “suka”, which is Russian for bitch

You think the line "No, not the American" is about hopper?

Absolutely no reason to think otherwise at this point. Season 3 was really well done.

Pretty sure he didn't. I think he did at another point, but after the chick spit in his face, he said "girl".

Just finished. It wasn't bad, but I definitely get the hate. There's only so much SJW bullshite you can cram into one show. The dick-tease lesbian was a nice touch, complete with the "I always stared at you in class" setup before the big "womp womp, she's a lesbian" punchline.

I loved how they wrote in the black girl as smart and above it all with the constant stink face, but then they had her trying to break open the canister and drink the glowing green goo.

And of course, the anti-American dogma at the carnival, juxtaposed with 4th of July images. "It doesn't get any more American - fatty foods, ugly decadence, rigged games ( ). . . designed to present the illusion of fairness (themselves, projecting). . . put money in the rich man's pocket, that's America."

Holy shite. How obvious does it have to get?

It goes along pretty well, if a little bit corny and convenient/lazy. Then, in episode 7, it just turns on you. I guess that's the best 80's reference of all - a show that preaches social messages once its course has run out. A la Tom Hanks as the alcoholic uncle in Family Ties or Dudley getting molested at the bike shop (if this has Disney connections, it's probably a whole lot like that. Isn't Millie getting molested by some rapper guy?). We just have different banal social issues today.

Obviously, they set it up for a 4th season, but you can only run basically the same plot so many times, and they are clearly out of ideas.

I think my main issue is they never really explain anything.

I understand theres risk in attempting to explain the upside world stuff, because they could screw it up and it would force the audience to ask a great deal of questions.

They just seem to explain only that which matters to the moment and I suppose they want to leave the rest to the audience, but wouldn't the characters ask deeper questions as well?

There's of course a middle road.

Which the letter Joyce helped Hopper on is.

Hopper needed to be balanced out a bit. But he also never acts like the toxic masculine tyrant he's being made out to be in complaints. He's just a single dad in over his head as the kids discover growing up.

Hops jumped into the Crack before she blew it and found his way out of it in Russia. That's my guess.

Yep, probably so. They catch him in the cargo once they get to Russia and throw him in a cell.
Yeah, I assumed they were talking about him when they mentioned "the American."

Dude. It's not a similar sign. It's the exact same sign, complete with the red border and the same number of stars on the top and bottom.

From Murray the kinda disgraced off the grid journalist who is more than a bit cynical. We also see him fighting the good fight against the Russians not supporting them. He's not against America, he's against the excess being used to say everything is fine when it isn't.

I just finished the season and I thought it was excellent. Definitely better than season two.
Two thoughts:
1. I think the American during the end credits was definitely Hopper
2. There was no political agenda in this season. If you think so you are being ridiculous.

Yes the stars are the same, big whoop. It uses a different font and isn't even a slogan.

I get that, and we certainly did at the time from middle aged hippies in the 80's, but juxtaposed with the 4th of July images and setting, it comes off more as the show's opinion, rather than one character.

Honestly, the dick-tease lesbian was the real low point. Hair guy got wronged.

I think Hopper is done. The American in captivity is most likely Brenner for a few reasons:

- We never see him actually die. He gets tackled by the Demogorgon, and then the camera cuts away.

- It would perfectly explain how the Russians are even aware of the Upside Down and Hawkins.

- The Duffers have been evasive when asked in interviews if Brenner is actually dead.

I was cheering Steve on the moment she got into the translating.

But the actors have enough chemistry to make broing out to get other girls work.

Guy went from being a shite for half a season to monster beating dad.

They did kind of soft retcon the Mindflayer. Season 2 it was near omnipresent was following El from the upside down.

Season 3 it doesn't know where she is and the stinger revealed a nonFlayed Demigorgon. So it doesn't control the whole Upside Down.
