Candice Bergen is so young, and so sweet looking in The Sand Pebbles. Hard to believe she morphed into Murphy Brown

McQueen and Bergen on riverboat boat scene on youTube

By 1975's The Wind and the Lion, she was doing the strong woman part pretty well. That's my favorite Sean Connery movie. I think the old boy would have liked being Mulay Ahmed Mohammed Raisuli the magnificent, sherif of the Riffian Berbers. Who wouldn't?

Not sure why Papillion gets such a crappy time slot, but... man, he was in a lot of great movies.

McQueen almost looks like he's rocking a New Ibeira haircut in this rowboat scene.

Fun fact: McQueen was originally offered the role of Cpt. Willard in Apocalypse Now.

He wanted to do the part, but also didn't want to spend 14 weeks (later turning into 10 months) in the jungles of the Phillipines. He also had major issues with the part. Instead of Willard being a silent, shell-shocked, semi-crazed observer/assassin, he wanted him to be some all-knowing arse kicker who controlled every situation he was in.

I love Steve McQueen, but that would have been a disaster.

Too bad they didn't put Reds last and move up Bugsy and McCabe & Mrs. Miller. There's always DVR.

The ones I included pictures with, are very good.

If they show "Ishtar" first, that will ruin your viewing pleasure.

I bet both Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty wish they could take that one back.

Is that bold emphasis a mistake, or a Freudian slip revealing your attraction to Karl Malden?

Sidenotes:

1. Many of the exterior/town shots in the movie were filmed in Bay St. Louis Mississippi, and notable locations-- the boarding house, the train depot-- are still standing there today.

2. Movie also has the girl who played 'Scout' in To Kill A Mockingbird playing Natalie Wood's younger sister.
