Agree. I like to listen to movies at work. I listened to this the other day. It has been a while since I watched it. I guess since I was just listening to it while I worked, and not actually watching it...the cemetery scene seemed so much more powerful. I've read a lot about the actual Shelby(Susan)...very sad.

There is some interesting trivia on IMDB.

Especially towards the bottom, if you click on spoilers...gives a lot of info about the real story.

Some great performances in that. I thought Sally Field was particularly great.

Only thing I can add is my wife wanted to name our daughter Eloise until I told her if we did I'd call her Ouiser.

LMAO. That’s awesome.

The bleeding armadillo groom’s cake gets me every time.

The accents were all wrong, but the performances were all first rate. They definitely got the “feel” of what it’s like to live in a small town in the south. A lot of us knew a Ouiser or a Clairee growing up. I’ve seen the stage play and I liked the movie so much more, because you got to see characters like Drum, Jackson, and Janice Van Meter who are only referenced in the play but never shown.

I loved Ouiser's deadpan remark about that cake.

"It looks like an autopsy."

My father in law is from natchitoches and a lot of his buddies that were still living there were extras in the movie.
For a dramedy, it has a bunch of hilarious scenes most centered around Drum and Quiser.

I hated it. It was the movie that made me stop feeling sorry for sad female characters. I don't get choked up or mirror the emotions of women in movies mainly bc of the over-the-top snot-dripping cry by Julia Roberts. They were all cackling or crying. Ugh.

There have been some dudes, dads, brothers, friends, kids & pets that have tugged at my heart, but I haven't teared up over a woman in a movie ever since Steel Magnolias.

It was cool to get a movie based in NorthLa, but Julia Roberts and Olympia Dukakis accents were waaay over the top. Surprisingly, Shirley MacLaines accent was really good.

Julia Roberts is a Georgia native so her accent, if over the top, would have been at the director's direction, as it were.

If anyone's accent were over the top, it would have been Daryl Hannah's.
