Star Wars Viewing Figures Show Disturbing Lack of Faith in Sequel Trilogy

Remember when they announced the new Rey movie a few years ago? Yeah that’s not happening

Newly-released viewing figures for Star Wars movies and TV shows have revealed a surprising lack of interest in the franchise's recent sequel trilogy era, and now fans are discussing how this may already be impacting Disney's plans for the series going forward.
quote:
Nielsen broadcasting data for 2025 has given fans an intriguing peek behind the curtain of Disney+'s usually opaque viewing figures, and revealed exactly which Star Wars movies and TV shows are being binged and rewatched. And, unfortunately, it's not great news for the sequels.
Of the 33 billion minutes spent watching Star Wars content in 2025 (across linear TV and streaming), 44.2% of that time was spent viewing Star Wars live-action films — with A New Hope, The Phantom Menace and Rogue One in the top three.
quote:
While Nielsen does not go on to list out the rest of the Star Wars movies by viewing popularity across the whole year, it has provided what was being watched specifically on May 4, 2025 (Star Wars day!) as a snapshot. In terms of Star Wars movies, A New Hope and The Phantom Menace both led the chart (mirroring the trend for 2025 as a whole), followed by Empire Strikes Back, Revenge of the Sith, Attack of the Clones, Return of the Jedi and then Rogue One. In other words: the six films from the original and prequel trilogies, with not a single sequel trilogy film in the most-streamed top 10, which is otherwise filled by Disney+ shows Andor and Tales of the Underworld, and the ever-popular Clone Wars cartoon series.

Phantom menace being 2 is kind of crazy, but it’s probably because of the new Maul show

The prequels will always hold a dear place in my heart
In an alternate world, Lucas never sold the rights to Disney and moves forward with making his own version of the sequel trilogy, bringing balance to the Force.

Recency bias, for sure.

Rogue One
"I am one with the Force and the Force is with me" This is one of my all time favorite pieces of dialogue from all the Star Wars movies.
The movie is right up there with Empire for me.

Honestly, I wouldn’t place it over Revenge of the Sith. I always thought that was the best one and most entertaining

Watched about 15 minutes of The Last Jedi the other day because my wife (no Pics) was curious why everyone hated it. I showed her the Luke alien cow titty juice, Mary Poppins Leia, Purple Haired DEI Space Captain, And Love will save us chubby girl stopping Fin from his hero ending.
All she said was, I get it now.
Ive said this before,
Star Wars can be saved but not by Disney. It would have to undergo a 1989 Batman to Nolan Batman Begins type transformation. A complete overhaul.

In case anyone was wondering how they got these numbers so quickly, Maul finale not being listed when it released yesterday was fishy.

Headline misleading so here's the summary:
Article takes Nielsen viewing data for a few different categories:
- Top 3 SW films watched during 2025.
- Top 10 most streamed SW products specifically on May 4th 2025.
- Most streamed SW products by generation during Q1 2026.
Results as follows:
**Top 3 SW films watched during 2025:**
- A New Hope.
- Phantom Menace.
- Rogue One (most likely boosted due to Andor S2).
**Top 10 most streamed SW products on May 4th 2025:**
- Andor (again, boosted due to S2).
- A New Hope.
- The Phantom Menace.
- Empire Strikes Back.
- Revenge of the Sith.
- Attack of the Clones.
- ~~Revenge~~ Return of the Jedi.
- Rogue One.
- Tales of the Underworld (literally launched that day).
- TCW.
**Most streamed SW products by generation during Q1 2026:**
- Ages 2-13 & 62-80 for **Mando**.
- Ages 14-29 for **TCW**.
- Ages 30-45 & 46-61 for **Andor**.

I’m not saying the prequels in general are bad, AOTC and ROTS are great.
PM is just boring; Anakin is too young

The last part is Q1 2026, seems the younger generation has been catching up on Mandalorian

great.
First time I have ever seen AOTC called great without additional language like "great" plus "big old pile of shite."

ROTS? Absolutely.
Both? I don't think so.
AOTC is easily 8th out of 8, even when extending a kindness to TFA and including it in the mainline trilogies & rightfully including Rogue One.

Neither are great. AOTC is flat out bad. ROTS had its moments, but utterly failed to stick the landing.

There was a time when they could have released a 2 hour film of monkeys throwing balls of shite at each other, called it Star Wars and still grossed a billion.
But then they actually did that, over and over, so the shine is just not there anymore and it's never coming back.
Lesson: Women suck at doing things. Thanks, Kathy.

Something I find damning for Star Wars and Lucasfilm is that my kids dont give two shits about star wars. Any of it.
Marvel 2012-2019 is their Star Wars.
a few years from now when they come home from college for thanksgiving, We are going to watch Capt. America and Iron Man and The Avengers after dinner. Not Star Wars. And Im fine with that. Disney star wars is not going to stand the test of time. It is already fading into the void.

I fully believe that after enough time has passed, they will recast Han, Luke and Leia and do a sequel trilogy based on them, completely ignoring the Rey/Kylo trilogy.
Plenty of other movie series have done the same where they create sequels based on the original and ignoring other movies in the chronology
