I doubt that they spent anywhere near 1B to do all of that, but I agree with your thoughts.

This is not as farfetched as it seems. 800 million was the rumored break even estimate for TFA.

These movies spend an absurd amount on marketing and distribution. Disney demands a pretty big cut for starwars from the box office. The rumor was 65% of TLJ, but I have not saw anything on TROS. So that helps.

What? That would be absurd. It is never that small.

Presuming it's around the same for ROS, it's a sign of how high the bar is for Star Wars that a movie that will log a couple hundred million in profit is coming in below expectations.

It’s a wash for the Mouse. They made over $200 million more for Aladdin than they hoped for and TROS will probably bring about that less in what they wanted.

Caught TROS last night. It was ok, but I felt like I had seen the movie before, because I had. Does this plot sound familiar?

Good guys find out about massive and deadly threat to planets in the galaxy.
Good guys must enter a bad guy fortress and retrieve a macguffin.
Good guy group is split in two while in the fortress.
Planet(s) blown up to demonstrate the bad guy threat.
Good guys find weakness in the bad guy threat and plan to exploit it.
Good guys take a fleet to the bad guy threat and have big casualties.
Unexpected reinforcements show up.
Good guys end bad guy threat with explosion(s).

Count the number of Star Wars movies that have this plot. Greg Grunberg’s character should be called “new Porkins”, because that’s the exact role of his character.

Here’s the big question about TROS: the rebellion had just learned the location of the Sith planet. How did they know about the atmosphere, the location of the enemy fleet within the atmosphere, and the beacon?

Also note how easy it became for a single fighter to take out a Star Destroyer when they targeted the world killer gun on the bottom. Silly.

Yeah...bullshite. There are a lot of variables, but movie theaters stand to earn between 40% and 65% of the revenue taken in by ticket purchases.

It looks like 515M domestic will be the ceiling. Until last weekend, I was certain it would push to 550, but it has run out of gas.

I wonder if there's still enough global business to push it to 1.1 B... I doubt it, but who knows.

I was kind of hoping that it wouldn't hit $1 billion but knew that such a dream wasn't realistic. It will finish below Rogue One's box office gross, however, and for that I am happy.

I recently read a Forbes article commentating on why the bottom fell out of Star Wars and he failed to take into account the angry fan base and the negative reaction to TLJ. His reasoning? Disney is saturating the market with Star Wars movies. Are you kidding me?! THAT'S your theory?! The MCU has been releasing up to two movies per year and they've been grossing well over $1 billion each and every time.

The fans just hated the newer trilogy. What's even crazier, is that they seemed to hate this trilogy more than the much maligned prequels.

He's correct. And further, they're saturating it with the same stories.

The MCU isn't a valid comparison because they've been giving fans variety.

Abrams and his copy of the OT did more damage to Star Wars than TLJ could have ever done, regardless of the crying and bitching of a small group of insecure fans.

The MCU released 3 movies in each of 2017, 2018, and 2019. This year is back to 2, but next year has 4 releases.

Saturation isn’t the problem. Quality is. He knows that.

So your theory is that Abrams destroyed Star Wars by creating by far the highest grossing movie in the Disney era which is by far the best of the Disney trilogy and the third, maybe second best SW movie since 1983?

I just want to get you on record saying that.

Avatar was the highest grossing movie in history for a decade. fricking Avatar. Let's not pretend that box office numbers are indicative of quality. Abrams benefited from the hype and nothing more. TFA was garbage.

I’m going to say this again. I assume it was one of Scott’s Forbes articles. He has a vendetta against starwars fans that are unhappy. He has for awhile now. He will make any excuse to blame it on something besides fans being mad about the direction Disney took starting with TLJ. His takes and predictions are so bad that his articles are banned from box office reddit.
