Why all the hate? Perhaps because she was a fricking joke of an “admiral” (I’m sorry but I cannot take a Post menopausal purple haired woman in an evening dress seriously as a flag officer) and a fricking idiot of a battlefield commander. She got most of her command killed due to her stupidity.
ETA: and for the record, I liked TLJ, I just hated Holdo.

Not only was she pointless, she was stupid. What was the point in keeping her stupid plan secret from her own officers? It resulted in an outright mutiny. And had she told her officers they might could have pointed out how stupid her plan was and how it was going to get a lot of people needlessly killed.

If she had even an ounce of sense she’d have realized her plan wasn’t going to work. First of all her transports were getting wiped out almost immediately. And even had they made it to the planet, what was her plan then? The kamikaze plan didn’t occurs to her until after most of her command was obliterated. But what did she think would happen to the now stranded troops on the planet once the still intact First Order Fleet has destroyed her ship? Was she just hoping they’d go on their merry way? Did she not consider the very real possibility they’d post their fleet in orbit and pulverize the Resistance forces via orbital bombardment?
Her plan should have been to load the transports, including herself, and leave behind one droid with orders that the second the last transport was away it was to point the ship straight at the Super Dreadnaught and blow it to hell. It’s simple and it ensures her command escapes intact.
Maybe if she’d have done like any good commander and consult her officers in a council of war, they’d have suggested this.

Look, I didn't like the character. There's no build up for her, she keeps their plans a secret, and that causes a LOT of issues.
Now, to be fair, while watching TLJ I thought, "Oh, they're being tracked so there must be a traitor on board. That sort of makes sense why she doesn't want to share her plans, because she doesn't know who the traitor is." Of course, I gave them too much credit. If they included that one tiny detail, her actions make a lot more sense.
