What I'm griping about are the specific plot points that are repeated, like the Death Star/Starkiller, droid with secret info being hunted by the empire, abandoned protagonist coming from a tough desert planet, etc.
The Starkiller X-wing sequence was a subplot compared to the Ren/Rey/Solo/Finn sequence.
So what, Rey comes from a desert planet. That's where the similarities end. She's in an entirely different situation than Luke outside of that. She has to scavenge to make rations and survive, she has no caretakers, and she's responsible for getting herself off the planet.
There are similarities in everything. There was enough that was different.

I thought it was a joke also. I thought it was because he didn't want to tell Han that he was actually a storm trooper

- both are orphans
- both find a droid with information and try to return it
- both leave via the falcon while being chased by storm troopers
- both are expert pilots despite unsubstantiated training/experience
- both are offered the same light saber
- both are offered a job by Han, but turn it down
I'm sure there are dozens more.

I just watched it. It's a good film, not great. It had some great stuff, but also some others that had me scratching my head. That scene where those gangs are were after Han was a weird scene. I don't know if I missed anything but it felt out of place. I also felt the film was a bit rushed. Overall thou, I really enjoyed it and I'm sure a new generation of Star Wars fans will be formed after this one. Solid B

I agree. The gangs and aliens felt like they belonged in one of Abrams' Star Trek films, not Star Wars.
It was simply a filler scene to provide some action in between exposition. I feel it should have been removed to allow more time at the end of the film to tie things up.

Agreed on the gang scene. They needed some reason for Han to not just get rid of Rey and finn...so they used that. If that is the worst scene in the film it's something I can happily live with. They should have given us a better look at the Rath tars but they were moving too fast.
They killed it on every other action sequence. Loved the Jakks escape. I left my feet when the falcon took off from jakku. Our whole theatre was roaring.

Looked through most of this thread and didn't see discussion about the X-wing pilot doll shown at the beginning when she's making food. Not to mention the helmet. Where do you suppose these items came from?

The MF scenes were pretty ridiculous.
That ship is fricking indestructible.

Saw it in 2d yesterday, but how is it in 3d?

I actually wish I'd seen it in 2d with better sound.

3D was great. I didn't feel like it was distracting in the least.

Yeah, the movie felt a bit rushed. I mean Captain Phasma was pretty heavily marketed, but she was a non factor in the film. Also, it felt too easy to defeat this new version of the death star. And Carrie Fishers scenes were brutal.
With all that being said, I still really liked it and I can't wait to see it again.

It was good in 3-D. Didn't have the feel of a "Made for 3D" movie, though.
I would've preferred 2D, TBH. This morning's 3-D showing was the only time slot I could sneak away from work in.
What I thought was friggin' cool was how much punishment those YT-1300s could take. They beat the frick out of that thing for 2 hours straight and it kept on ticking. I know the Falcon has mega-mods on it, but still - the stock Corellians in my old PC games were tough as balls to shoot down. I learned not to pick a fight with one unless I was in a pack.
Meanwhile, an idling X-Wing is toast after 1 direct hit.

I just got back from me 2nd viewing of the movie, and I still loved it. It brought back so much nostalgia from the original trilogy. With that said though, I'm not going to sit here and try and argue that it didn't steal a lot from ANH. But I'm ok with it because it actually brought back the Star Wars "feel" that the last trilogy severely lacked.
I do kind of wish that they would've explained a little more as to how the First Order came into existence (maybe in the opening rolling screen). I mean, I get that Snoke created it out of the remnants of the Empire through the power of the Dark Side. But how did it get so powerful without the Republic openly opposing it before it got too big (especially since they made it seem that the Republic was basically secretly aiding the Resistance.) Hopefully we get some more in depth background on the creation of the First Order in later films.
And anyone that can't fathom how Rey defeated Kylo needs to rewatch it. Kylo was injured so badly that sweat was pouring off his face when he caught up to Rey and Finn. He was struggling just to keep his head up. I'm sure he was focusing most of his force power just to keep himself moving. And despite that, he still whipped Finn (who was raised/conditioned to be an exceptional solder), and was beating Rey (who obviously had to learn to fight at an early age just to survive, and proved it by whipping two dudes that were twice her size) back fairly easily considering he was bleeding out. It wasn't until Rey remembered what Maz told her, and she relaxed and let the force guide her attack, that she was able to overpower a severely injured Kylo.
I can't wait until we get the second part of this trilogy. Hopefully we'll get more background into Luke's Jedi academy, and Snoke's rise to power. I have a feeling that Snoke isn't just a new Sith. And I'm sure that the 2nd and 3rd installments won't be rehashing of ESB & ROTJ.

Saw it for the 3rd time this morning. This one at Cinemark XD in 3D. Decided to sit only 3 or 4 rows back just for kicks so the screen took up my entire view.
It was awesome. The scene where they show the view from the X-Wings cockpit, even though it is only 5-10 seconds took my breath away.
I like the movie even more each time so far. Now that I am over the awe of it, I am focusing on more details and picking up lots of little things.
