I honestly cannot fathom how anybody thinks that half this movie's plot was made up of original ideas. I would put it at about 10% personally.
I don't think anyone can say that it was all original ideas, but there are lots of people acting like TFA is a scene for scene reboot of ANH and that isn't true either.

Yeah, it also stole a lot from ROTJ

Did BB-8 flick off Finn or give him a thumbs up?
Thanks for asking this so I didn't have to

To rehash: a young orphan with some strong potential in the force lives a boring and hardscrabble life on a desert planet. By luck, this individual stumbles on a droid with a very important piece of information which is being hunted by an evil empire. With the help of friends they get back to the resistance/rebel alliance. To their horror, however, they discover that the evil empire (led by an evil masked figure who uses the force to choke officers) are using a massive spherical planet type thing to blow up entire planets (and in fact they do blow some up). They hatch a daring plan involving using X-Wings to attack a fatal flaw in the design, and blow the thing up. The X-Wings return to the small jungle planet base of the resistance to cheering and hugging. However, the war is not over, because the evil dark lord and his master are still alive. The protagonist leaves to find a powerful Jedi master to help them. Also, this is speculation, but I'm betting the deliberate move to conceal her parents is because she's the child/sibling of certain key characters in the film, one of whom is evil.
How is this not a reboot again?

It's not a reboot. Keep saying it though. Looks like you are habing fun.

I saw it for the second time yesterday and enjoyed it even more than the first time. I loved it! All the silliness of the prequels have been washed away. Also very relieved that they didn't kill off Kylo Ren so we get to see him develop more. I think he made a great villain. Really digging Rey also.

All I hear is people saying "it's not a reboot", but nobody can explain why. I'm still waiting.

I said it was not a scene for scene reboot.
Do I need to break down what "scene for scene" means for you?
Posted on 12/19/15 at 2:31 pm to DrSteveBrule
Obviously nobody thinks it's a scene for scene reboot, Mr. Literal Interpretation. It is a plot-point for plot-point reboot, however, with maybe two or three minor changes.

So during Rey's Force-back scene, right before she falls out of the treasure chest room, you can hear Obi-Wan say "Rey" and Ewan McGregor is the one who said it.
New theory: Luke is standing at Rey's mother's grave/gravestone in that final shot.

You got him bro. It's not a scene for scene reboot. Who the frick has said this?

I actually think it was Alec Guinness that said it. They cut out "Rey" from one of his lines in the original trilogy.

I get where you are going with it, but keep in mind that A New Hope is just a reboot of sorts of The Odyssey. Think about it:
A hero is sent on journey with the help of a magical weapon and the wisdom of a mentor (that is later killed) in order persevere against the dark mysterious forces of the universe.
The troupe has been done to death for years and TFA just takes the material of the original trilogy through the Odyssey's set-up and creates new characters to tell a new, but familiar tale.

Plenty of people.
It's been called A New Hope remake by many reviewers.

Yes they have claimed it a reboot. Who has said it is a "scene for scene" reboot?
Posted on 12/19/15 at 2:58 pm to DrSteveBrule
It I'd most definitely a reboot. They may as well have used the same title.

What you are describing is essentially the grand overarching theme of the entire Star Wars franchise, and I have no problem with that. What I'm griping about are the specific plot points that are repeated, like the Death Star/Starkiller, droid with secret info being hunted by the empire, abandoned protagonist coming from a tough desert planet, etc.

Yes, but nobody said it was a "scene for scene" remake like you implied. You're dancing around the question.

Your tears taste so sweet. Star wars stacked. You...

Agreed. This movie is obviously a huge failure.
If you've never seen Star Wars OR don't care about creativity you will love it. Also: are we now at the point where ticket sales = a movie being actually good?
If so, frick me.
