Opening scene had a lot of potential but the stupid back and forth between Poe and Hux made it lame. Also why were the bombers so slow??? They were space ships. Not like weight would slow them down.
Leia flying scene was so whack and made me audibly say WTF in the theater.
Luke throwing the light saber over his shoulder was SO BAD. After Rey hands it to him, he should be looking down at it in his hands feeling overwhelming emotion and inner conflict due to his past with it. Do rapid flashback to important events in the light saber's history. It would have been fine and much more effective if he was simply overcome with emotion and dropped it at his own feet.
The plot with the ships barely out of reach and Finn/Rose going on their dumb mission was crap and should have been scrapped all together. Figure out something better that can put the First Order and The Resistance into direct conflict. There has to be something better.
It should have been Admiral Ackbar instead of the purple haired chick to sacrifice himself to save everyone.
The main bulk of the movie should have been centered around Luke training Ray and Snoke training Kylo.
Show the wisdom Luke has gained through his travels and explore different parts of the force. Show some qualities in Ray's power that scare Luke into flashbacks of his time training Kylo and their falling out. Hint that Luke has an insane amount of power but don't show it yet (that's what we all wanted out of Luke).
Snoke and Kylo's training should have been brutal and dark. It should have really fleshed out how evil and manipulative and cold Snoke is. He tears Kylo apart and basically tortures him during training to bring out the true darkness in Kylo. Have Snoke explaining the intricacies of the dark side and/or history of his path to get there during this time. This would have given us more exploration into the dark side and especially Snoke so that we could truly HATE him and understand Kylo turning on him. It would have made his death more meaningful and had us rooting for him to die. Ray shouldn't have been there and Kylo should have eviscerated the Royal Guard by himself after murdering Snoke. This enforces his new dark side mastery and authority as the new supreme leader.
If they really wanted to stick with the final battle setting, they should have changed some things.
1. Have that big cannon fire a shot that opens the big door a little like they did. That was fine. But while it heats up again, Finn should have kamikazed into it. Gives him a hero's death and a reason for not continuing it use it to just wipe everyone out.
2. Rey is there but Luke doesn't allow her to go out and fight because he believes he caused Ben to become Kylo and it it is up to him to fix it.
3. Luke should not have been a force projection. He should have been there in person. Still have the walkers light him up but he is so force powerful that he withstands. After the dust settles he is still standing there. He then uses his immense force powers to destroy/knock over the walkers. He calls out to Ben.
4. Kylo has the shuttle land and he walks out to face Luke for a mano-e-mano, student-teacher, light-dark light saber showdown. Kylo is now much more powerful after his dark side training and thirst for revenge and power. He can do force lightning and uses it against Luke. He is shouting at Luke while they fight about how he wronged him and forced him to the dark side. Luke is not trying to kill him at first but bring him back to the light to save him from himself and because he is family. But Kylo is lost to the dark side and uses Luke's intentions against him. Not sure how to end this fight without Luke dying but a death in this way would have been a better payoff than him floating away as a force fart.

God I forgot about them to be honest. I was hoping to get a backstory on them and it seems like Rian completely overlooked or forgot about them. Didn't the Force Awakens (in the flashback) hint that the Knights were involved in the destruction of Luke's next gen Jedi?
Luke said that Kylo left with a hand full of his students and slaughtered the rest. I assume those he left with are the Knights of Ren.

I hope the new film jumps 5 years into the future so we see more Jedi. If Rey can become a Jedi in 3 days these kids will be masters of the force with that much time.

Did anyone else hate the slow motion scenes during the light saber fights? Felt out of place and like I was watching Kill Bill or some shite.
At one point, i thought the projector dealio broke, or slowed.

But he wasn't overcome with emotion, for good reason. He didn't want it. He had come to that island to be left alone and not be found. Why would he want his light saber? I liked that after all of that work to get there and all of that build up, he just tossed it. It's showing that the fairy tale cliches that have governed the series for so long simply do not apply any more.

Agreed. The plot worked functionally, but it was stupid. It seemed like it only existed to allow the Rey/Luke storyline time to catch up and give Poe, Finn, and Rose something to do in the meantime. It was completely unnecessary. It teaches some good lessons about how hubris and pyrric victories while doing a nice little bit of world building, but the payoff simply isn't worth the time sunk into it.

I would have liked this as well. However, I did really enjoy the limited force training we saw between Ray and Luke.

I would have preferred this as well, but if they actually do something cool with Finn in the next movie, I'll be ok with it. The force projection stuff was really cool, but once again, completely unnecessary. They even showed luke's sunken X-Wing as forshadowing that he could leave any time he wanted by simply raising it from the depths like he did in Empire Strikes Back.

I'm sure this has been said before and I'm a piece of shite for saying it, but I'm glad we don't have to deal with carrie fisher's attempt to act in the next movie. Sucks she's gone, but this would have been a good movie for leia to die in. Pass the resistance to someone else.

All I could think of was those idiots in the State Department and Special Council's office using an app to coordinate the #Resistance calling themselves Dumbledore's Army.

Yeah I don’t get the starship design. The new XWings are great. And they throw in A Wings and these lumbering whatever the hells they were. Y Wings made the initial run on the Death Star. Maybe they could’ve dug those up.

It was fricking stupid. You have already have an established hero of the resistance that could heroically sacrifice himself to save the fleet but instead you introduce some random purple haired chick that no one knows or cares about? Then kill off Akbar so weakly? What was the point? Its just amateur storytelling.

I think the reason is that we know that Poe would have immediately trusted Akbar. He, nor the audience, had zero rapport with the purple haired chick. We're supposed to hate her. We're supposed to not trust her. We're supposed to question her and assume that we and Poe know better than she does.
The biggest cautionary tale in this movie is the consequences of hubris. Poe assumed he could take down the Deadnaught, and while he was right, he basically lost most of the attack fleet in the process. Luke believed his own legend and assumed he could train the next generation of Jedi without any of them turning to the Dark Side. Snoke believed there was zero chance Kylo-Ren would betray him. Ray assumed Luke would train and save the galaxy just because she found him and gave him his sword back. Poe assumed that just because he didn't know the plan that his plan was better and that finding a code breaker on Planet Monte Carlo, mutinying against the acting Admiral, and having 2 Resistance soldiers sneak aboard a star destroyer to disable the tracker was the safest option. Rhaegar fought valiantly, Rhaegar fought nobly, Rhaegar fought honorably. And Rhaegar died.
Complaining about how much you hated the Purple Haired Chick is like complaining about what a dick Snape was in Harry Potter. You're supposed to hate him. That's his job.
I would have preferred Leah die when Akbar did. It really would have worked with how Ren was so conflicted and couldn't pull the trigger, yet his mother dies anyways.

I hate to say it but I actually prefer Jar Jar and Ewoks to prank calls. Not only was the joke not funny and ran too long but the fact that Hux didn't catch on faster made him look like a moron. This film is at the very bottom behind AOTC.

Saw it tonight.
I laughed so many times but not once at a moment meant to be funny. From the first scene to flying Leia, it could have been a Family Guy parody.

Only women can be calm and rational. All men are driven by power and can’t control themselves. That’s what we learned today.
