Also, did Ren sexually assault Rey when he was shirtless while communicating?

Only women can be calm and rational. All men are driven by power and can’t control themselves. That’s what we learned today.

All of that also makes the movie kinda shitty too.
I think the studio took a lot of the criticism of TFA to heart. People seemed to mostly criticize that it was too similar to the originals and too predictable.
In this movie, they went to great lengths to torpedo established Star Wars tropes. That's going to be controversial. It's high risk/potentially high reward. I think some of those risks really paid off big (everything involving Luke sans him being a force ghost rather than present in person). Some of those risks seem a little unnecessary and weird (Leah flying, purple haired Admiral refusing to tell Poe the plan, etc).
It's a tight rope these directors are walking. Too similar and they get crucified for being unoriginal. Too outside of the box and it gets criticized for "not feeling like a Star Wars movie" and "sh#@ting all over the franchise". I think some of that turnabout was successful, but some of it may have been an overreaction. It results in a movie that's very uneven. Some plot lines are brilliant. Some plot lines seem really questionable. Some characters seem superfluous.
What the movie does really well is subvert your expectations and constantly keep you guessing. Every time you think you know exactly where this is going, it throws you a curve. Some liked that, some didn't.

When your entire movie turns into subverting expectations, thats a problem. Just because I don't want my coffee ice cold that doesn't mean I want it so scalding hot it puts me in the hospital.

It was shite storytelling man. The 45 minutes of Finn/Asian chick were completely irrelevant. I still don't even know why Finn is in the movie. I don't even mind the direction the Luke/Rey/Ren plot is going. It could be good. The basically wrote Poe out of any meaningful role in the story. "Oh look, here's this reckless fighter pilot that always fricks up and can't be trusted."
I walked away from the movie not know what story they are trying to tell and it barely even ties into TFA if at all. Why spend an movie introducing new characters and storylines and then completely abandon them for the second iteration?

quote:For what purpose? What was the point of TFA if the second movie was just going to go off in it's own random direction? This movie was complete shite from a storytelling point of view.

I think that's very fair.

It sucks when the unexpected, welcome parts are overshadowed by useless, cringeworthy missions.

Completely forgot about that part. Gosh that was bad

Josh Trank, Lord and Miller, Treverrow, Rian Johnson. Kathleen Kennedy is a great judge of talent. She's the worst thing to happen to Star Wars.

She asked him to put a shirt on? Who writes this shite?
She hated him til that scene, after she tries to save him. Just sayin'....it works on tinder

See, while the Finn mission proved to be unnecessary (because they failed and the Admiral was holding her cards stupid close to the vest), I did find it enjoyable. I really thought the casino planet was cool, and learning that the money class was selling to both sides in the war was pretty important. The scenes with the little slave children helped to show the actual oppression happening under the First Order.
The only "cringeworthy" moment on the casino planet was the chase scene with the horse alien creatures running amok. It really stopped making sense when they went onto the open beach and up into the grass. Had they abandoned them in the city, it would have worked for me. That is probably the single worst looking sequence in the movie, imo.

You mean it wasn’t cringeworthy at the end with that dialogue? Where Finn is talking about it being worth it to wreck the town but Rose thinks it’s only worth it when they release that one animal? That was pretentious as frick considering they’re trying to save the resistance (RE: universe)

Will we ever see X-Wings again? They don't have any more ships and I doubt the New Republic flies them. The ending where they called for help reminded me of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

How was it important?

It wasn’t. Just like nothing in TFA was important.

Just got out.
Outside of the casino planet stuff which was hot garbage and prequel level cringeworthy, I don’t think there has been a better SW movie and I don’t know if anyone will ever make one to match it.
I don’t know how anyone ever matches the jaw dropping stuff Rian Johnson did in this movie.
He deserves whatever shite he gets from the Finn/Rose stuff, especially on the casino planet but strip that away and it was a masterpiece.

Thanks to The Last Jedi that is most definitely true.
