Prior to that role, Elba wasn't exactly the heavy hitter he is now.
He wasn't exactly a nobody either.
He had already done a year of Luther, an extended role on The Office, a couple seasons of The Wire, and films like American Gangster, Obsessed, and Rock'n'Rolla before he was in Thor.

Why would Parker as a black man be pandering when Bond would not?
First off, when did I ever say that I wanted Elba to get the roll of Bond? Now with that said, it probably wouldn't bother me near as much because I didn't grow up reading Bond novels. The only Bond material that I really ever was exposed to are the movies.
But in my mind comics are different. Most comic readers start out reading comics at an early age. And with characters like Spider-man & Batman, we've also had numerous cartoon renderings of the characters that we also watched as kid. So we grow up with these characters. And to have these characters that we grew up with changed all of a sudden isn't going to sit very well. Maybe I'm in the minority with that line of thinking.

Not white =/= black, people. Personally, I'm hoping for that Asian spidey.

were you not the same poster who went off for 10 pages about Michael B Jordan being johnny storm?
My big problem with that was making only Johnny black b/c I think that distinctly changes the family dynamic and will eventually lead to directions (namely the "you're not my real family" drama or worse, a potential love triangle) that I don't care for with that group.
If both Sue and Johnny were black or if it was was Reed or Ben, I wouldn't really care.

I hated the entire premise of that movie, not the Johnny aspect.

This. No one gives a shite about casting black actors. It just fricks with the original story when they are both obviously not of the same mother and father and are probably adopted.
Michael B Jordan is freaking great actor no one is disputing that. Loved him in Friday Night Lights and Chronicle. But if they had cast a black actress to play his sister, no one would care, because they would be brother and sister like the source material.

Actually Spider-Man was taking selfies 40 or 50 years before selfies were even a thing. He freaing invented the selfie.

Would you think it would be a good idea to cast a black or latino person to play someone like General Patton, Winston Churchill, or General Rommel in a WW2 movie? I don't because those people weren't black/latino just like Peter Parker isn't black or latino.
I hope this point is not laughed off, because it's spot on. The fact that these iconic characters are not and never were real people have NOTHING to do with whether or not they FEEL real.
The fact that Kal El never really came from a planet Krypton is irrelevant to what the world fully knows him to be in our collective minds based on decades of comics and film. Same for Bats, or Cap, or Spider-Man, etc...at least as far as their original versions.
And as I said earlier in the thread...I certainly get where that would potentially be isolating to a minority kid interested in comics and finding that nearly all the icons are white. Being a white kid thumbing through comics, it never really dawned on me that most o the guys looked like me...but they obviously did. However...the blame does not lie with current comic fans who want to hold on to these characters as they've grown up with them. It lies in the past with writers, artists and companies that simply were not progressive enough to create characters portraying minorities in these roles.
You can't fix this "injustice" by altering an icon. You make it better by utilizing the minority characters you DO have in your stable (Black Panther is coming, remember?) and by attempting to create new icons. Simply suggesting that they weren't real so what difference does it makes misses the point I think.

"Hey we need a new Spider-Man. Let's get the best group of 20-30 yr old actors we can find and let them audition for the role"
"Holy shite did you see that Donald Glover guy? Perfect personality for Peter Parker and the fans love him. I think he's our guy"
Why limit it to guys? Why not just the best 20-30 actors in that age range? What if some 22 year old girl comes in and kills it?
If race of the character does not matter, why would sex?
Why not Patricia Parker?
My version is, we already know essentially who Peter Parker is...so you no more invite black actors to audition than you do women, or old people, or cats.

Has there ever been talk of bringing Peter Porker and the Amazing Spider ham to the big screen?

Was Marvel pandering when they cast a black Heimdall or did they just think Idris Elba kicks arse?
Of course they were. I was fine with it because I love Idris Elba and because I frankly don't give two shits about Heimdall.
Had they cast Idris as Thor, depiste the fact that he's a better actor than Hemsworth, I'd have been rightly pissed...because Thor is NOT a black guy.
