Given the time of year, I would love it if we had a 64 superhero tournament to see who would be the last superhero standing. Between Phoenix-Jean Grey, the Hulk, Superman, the Flash, Silver Surfer, Martian Manhunter, and Thor, along with a host of others that escape me at the moment, I would think after the first round, there would be some pretty hotly contested battles.
That can only end in blood and tears..
In other words, make it happen.
Until April 15th has passed I won't be able to join in much though.

how would we decide who wins? just based on votes?

In the MU, Spider-Man is considered a "mutate" not a mutant. Other mutates include the Hulk, Fantastic Four, and Daredevil.
So is Wolverine both a mutant and a mutate since his skeleton was altered?

I don't know how else we would decide, frankly. We could have a full on nerd debate a la Comic Book Men, but I doubt anyone has the time to sit on a teleconference for hours on end as we debate the intricacies of Deadpool's regenerative healing power and immortality versus Superman's invulnerability and super strength.

no. his skeleton was just given adamantium. that isnt really a genetic alteration. just like someone who gets a knee replacement isnt a mutate. its just one hell of a knee replacement operation.

One thread for nominations of the field (10 per poster?). A couple of playoffs to get in.
Vote it out. Then, starting in the sweet sixteen, sign up some writers to write what would happen in the fight so that when you release the results you have a couple of cool paragraphs to accompany the winners.
I'd write. Couldn't run it though.

There'd have to be all sorts of ground rules, too.
How did the two come to fight? Did they just happen upon each other and immediately begin to fight, or did they know they were in a tournament to see who the strongest superhero is and, therefore, had an opportunity to prepare? There is a big difference between Batman happening across Supes and Supes punching Batman into the next galaxy and Batman knowing he's fighting Supes and shooting the big blue boy scout with a kryptonite tranquilizer from 1000 yards out.
Is defeat death? Or submission? Or putting the opponent in a cage and sinking it to the bottom of the Marianas? If it's to the death, Deadpool, Thor, and a host of others are literally unbeatable.

We could have "secret wars" to determine the best, eh?

It would just be a popularity contest. Let me spoil it for you. Batman would win.

1. Knew they were in a tournament for strongest superhero
2. Has to be submission...I guess that shows restraint. Like a wresting match...first to 3 submissions wins.
Thinking too hard haha. Or I've already thought about this too much

"He can literally beat every single member of the Justice League!"
In fact, Batman even being in the same universe as Superman is stupid. Batman doesn't even belong in the conversation for strongest superhero. For frick's sake, he's just a man in a costume with a fancy car. Iceman would kill him. Iceman.
And this is coming from a guy who thinks Batman is probably the best conceived superhero in history.
ETA: all Doom did was give ammunition to fan boys of Batman to say that Batman's superpower is being able to beat every foe he faces, regardless of how ridiculous that is. That's like saying Batman would win because he's Batman. Stupid.

If you wanted a more in depth discussion of the issue, you could have picked someone like Namor who is a bit of a more complicated case - since most of his "powers" come from being part Human and part Atlantean but others (ie: flight) have been established to be from being a mutant.
Or even Falcon - I think Marvel toyed with establishing that his powers of communication with his hawk, Redwing, were due to him possibly being a mutant. But they ended up having it caused by the Red Skull using the cosmic cube. (come to think of it - that might be a good case study between being a mutant or having powers caused by an external factor).
I've personally thought it would be interesting for them to explore how far something like Hawkeye's marksmanship abilities would have to go to qualify as him being a mutant. I know it's due to his training but it would seem like his accuracy is above and beyond what a normal person could get from training.
(I've never followed the X-men line of books super closely but I'd guess there is some kind of a test to see if they have a specific gene. Which would rule out people like Hawkeye if he doesn't have it).

Woah. I was with you until here. Iceman is one of Marvel's most powerful mutants. Documented. He's up there with Jean Grey. Yes. More powerful than Magneto too. He's just always been too immature to realize it. He's invulnerable/immortal in modern comics. Just a side note. Carry on.
With that said, I don't think Batman would win. And regardless of who would win, it would be a fun exercise. I can see Dottie levels of war coming out of this one, especially if Batman is up to the table. Realists vs. Idealists. Epic.

I would have a literal nerd-gasm if this existed. And on a side note, I think the winner would be Superman unfortunately. But my dark horse (kinda) to win it all would be Phoenix. She unstoppable brah

Batman wouldn't be able to get out the first round of this 64 man tourney.

Really? Huh. Well that shakes things up. I was going off of the cartoon iteration, which I haven't seen in years. I just remember him being a more serious version of Frozone from the Incredibles (or rather, Frozone being a more kid-friendly version of Iceman).

The other thing is is this heroes only or are we adding villains. Phoenix vs. Dark Phoenix is different.
