Both of these (really the first 3) are on Netflix and I watched them last weekend. 1 is very good but 2 is exceptional. Didn’t remember it being this great. Alfred Molina is outstanding and the CGI looks great. Holds up super well and is a bit more serious than more recent Marvel films over last decade.

What is it about the aughts CGI that makes it hold up so well? It seems 2001-2005 cgi (LoTR) looks better than stuff that’s from say 10 years or so ago. I guess it’s the mix of good practical effects and cgi. Anyway was throughly entertained by both of these.

That movie is a lot more practical than you think. Doc Ocs arms for instance were puppetry. That’s why they look so good in close up’s and what not.

Something about Raimi's sets, specifically fake outdoor ones, always kinda take me out of it.

Spiderman 2 is still a top 5 or 10 superhero movie. It's excellent.

1 is good as well, but 2 was the high bar for a long time IMO.

3 is pretty dumb plot-wise, but still entertaining. But 2 is the best SM movie (or maybe arguably tied with No Way Home).

you pretty much answered your own question. filmmakers didnt rely entirely on CGI for everything

true but i was curious if there was maybe a certain software they were using or some type of technique. I suppose it really is just the masterful blend of practical and cgi

We had this thread a few weeks ago and that was the consensus along w/ the fact that when you rely so heavily on cgi, you have to cut down on quality due to the costs of so much cgi. Modern movies are starting to look like cartoons compared to stuff made a decade earlier.

i think it was just the laser focus on one thing or a couple things instead of the entire screen. the entire budget and effort went into Doc Oc's legs instead of Doc Oc's legs, the ground beneath him, the building exploding behind him, the characters in the background, the sweat glistening on his face, and the airplane flying over

I remember everyone losing their minds with excitement when the stills of venom came out before the movie released.....That turned quick once the movie came out.

I like all 3 movies but for the first one is the best. It helps that I have a really good memory of watching it in the theater on my 23rd birthday after having been a Spiderman comic reader in my teens.

puppetry

Very disappointing to watch Hollywood shy away from this.

Looks so much more realistic than modern CGI.

It is the best SM movie, and that fight scene on the side of the building between SM and DocOc is an absolute clinic. It's one of my favorite fight scenes ever put on film.

I remember the theater rocking with the new sound effects for S2. Doc was an excellent villain. By the end of 2 I was sick of Mary Jane.

2 is one of the best comic book movies ever made.

I watched it a few years ago for the first time in a long time, and for the first time actually knowing something about Sam Raimi.

Watching the hospital scene was amazing in that new lens.

Raimi and Jackson were both experienced directors and LOTR was a passion project for Jackson that took years to make. Compare that to today's Marvel movies where they find some cheap, inexperienced director to crap out some factory product and you'll understand the difference in quality.
