Soundtrack Tunes & Their Writers/Performers' Regular Gigs

The Where Are They Now? thread's mention of Steve Zahn jogged my memory about something I was thinking about as I saw That Thing You Do! on TV over the weekend.
Obviously, the hook of the title track of TTYD! keeps the Wonders in one-hit wonder territory. It was written IRL by Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne fame. It always made me think though - If a musician can write something so damned catchy for a movie, why is the music from their normal band so damned unlistenable? I couldn't name a single Fountains of Wayne song if my life depended on it. (I think there's one called "Use Somebody" that may or may not have been them. I don't care enough to look it up.) Schlesinger was one of the first celebs to die from COVID-19, passing away in April, 2020.
Another that fits this bill is Pharrell's songs in the various Despicable Me films, although Blurred Lines was every bit as catchy, and personally I dug his work with N.E.R.D.
The third song that came to mind for me was Maynard Keenan from Tool's side project Puscifer. They had a song on the original Underworld soundtrack, "REV 22:20". That one was probably closest to his work with TOOL, but I dug that song.
Any others that y'all think of that are like this to you?

I was more thinking folks whose regular musical gig you dislike, but love their soundtrack stuff for a fictional band or side project that gets featured in a movie.
John Cafferty might be a bad choice, since he's responsible for the song that plays during the GREATEST TRAINING MONTAGE IN CINEMATIC HISTORY

BTW, "C-I-T-Y" and "Tough All Over" also came to mind from Cafferty, but my Dad was a huge fan and loved him some Eddie and the Cruisers, to boot.

Because they are uppity artistic types. If they ever got big and famous and poppy they'd Cobain themselves for hipster points in the afterlife.

I was telling some LSU friends today - I hate that the advent of grunge was the soundtrack to my high school years. It didn't start to grow on me until hanging out with some Atlanta kids all summer in '93 and introduced 99X to my regular radio listening, but my hot take was always that Cobain was an acceptable price to pay to free Dave Grohl from behind the drums and ultimately give us the Foo Fighters.

I can't stand Radiohead but Jonny Greenwood's movie scoring is pretty good. The same with Trent Reznor, I'm not much of a NIN fan.

Apparently I forgot that Fountains of Wayne did "Stacy's Mom". My bad.

I like NIN, but wouldn't call myself a fan or anything. But Reznor's musical scores are absolutely perfect for the movies that use them.

Fountains of Wayne is great pop-rock.
Welcome Interstate Managers is start to finish a great album.

The article that I linked says that Schlesinger wrote TTYD! before Fountains of Wayne kicked off their career together. There was a contest for a 60's-era American pop band clearly inspired by the Beatles, and Adam's friends encouraged him to write for the contest.
Obviously bands' experiences with songwriting will change overall tone of what's written as multiple members have input, etc. but I wish Schlesinger had put more stuff like the Wonders' songs out there.

Fair enough.
He also did a lot of writing on Crazy Ex Girlfriend, if you prefer that side of his writing.

Aimee Mann is probably known more for the Magnolia soundtrack than she is for her solo career.

Unrelated - Voices Carry is one of the most overrated & overplayed 80s songs in existence.

Mark Mothersbaugh also falls into this category. Devo didn't mean much to me, but man, I can remember every note of his work on Rugrats.

Rugrats was my little brothers' generation, but I know he really won a lot of folks over with that.
