Sopranos S1 episode 6 I think.

Hesh was meeting with Junior and Tony outside at a table maybe in front of the butcher shop? They were discussing a percentage and Tax.

Can anyone help explain this scene and what was the tax?

I believe he was wanting more of a cut of Hesh's shylock business.

The tax is what Hesh has to kick up to the DiMeos in order to operate his illicit businesses on their turf.

So Junior took over after Jackie. Raised the tax and Hesh was trying to bargain down?

It’s a tax on his shylocking business. He is a loanshark/shylock. Let’s say he has $5 million out on the streets in loans that he’s collecting juice on at probably 2.5% per week he’s pulling in $125k a week just on interest. I believe they wanted 2% on the whole operation which would be $100k a year to operate and a $500k one time hit for back taxes since he had been operating with no tax for years due to his relationship with Tony and Tony’s father. Can’t quite remember the numbers but that was the gist of it.

Superficially. Hesh didn't even dispute that his taxes needed to go up. Apparently, he'd had a low rate negotiated way back when Tony's father was his guy on the inside.

This was also a way for Tony to assert influence in front of Junior, earn the money Hesh was kicking to him, plus make Junior feel comfortable that Junior was the boss (even though most capos deferred to Tony at that point).

How are they tied in with Johnny Sack. Was he a boss in NYC and Tony’s crew operated under them.

I never could figure out the ranks of different crews and bosses. Maybe a rewatch will help.

Still love the show though. Looks like it has held up well for a show close to 20 years old.

Johnny Sack was a Capo under Carmine in New York. Since the two families (NJ and NY) shared so many interests Johnny and Tony were the main contact points between the 2 families

All of the above is correct but if I remember correctly it had something to do with and got started because Hesh was shorting someone who had just found out about it ... Hesh had been doing it since Tony's dad died and, was it Junior, yeah I think it was found out about it and wanted to go overboard punishing Hesh for the perceived insult so they had to get Jackie involved at the sit down but Jackie was really sick at the time ... but the rest is just like everyone else said above for the most part.

S1 was a classic.

What was Junior's right hand man's name? Real smart arse, always busting Christopher's and Tony's balls?
