finn telling the guys about him and the security guard is one of the best scenes in the show
i don't mind that storyline for that scene, alone
The reaction from "he was catching not pitching" was one of the funniest moments imo. Paulie already felt betrayed but how much betrayal can one take?
ETA: Plus the ominous endless theories that Phil was gay sort of were only possible with Vito's storyline. The only part I didn't like was him on the lam getting so much time it was annoying but Tony not giving him up to Phil largely is what helped escalate the war. So him lamb chopping it to Maine or wherever was necessary in a sense.
As for random people showing up. IRL, there would have been made guys all over that they might not have directly known or done business with. I think the show handles bringing in new characters and making it seem like you've known them for 20 years pretty well. Goes back to what I was saying about not really being able to focus on the full scope of all the families and people in the Lupertazzi/Soprano family. If Tony or Johnny or Carmine or Phil are so powerful they have to have multiple crews and multiple soldiers and associates with those crews. we just don't see them.

I must be talking about that one.
Correct, it was the Season 3 opener.

Its funny that Carlo was so upset about Vito and then when Fat Dom comes in making jokes they end up killing him in rage. That was a great scene, "Silvio hit him first."
ETA: probably fairly accurate to IRL mob stuff, at least back in the day, someone gets killed out of rage and has to get rid of him before causing tremendous issues. Same with the Billy Bats in Goodfellas thing.

1 and 2 for sure.
Ralphy was pretty damn annoying there for a while but I guess it made him getting his comeuppance sweeter.
Chris and his movie/music angles were pretty annoying too.

That brought us Massive Genius and the hilarious recording studio scene with the AA lead singer. Actually given the other thread on Sopranos music I hadn't even considered that "Defile" song from the band before they went more "Matchbox 20."
"We're coming your way, don't be so gay, we're coming to defile defile youuuuu."'
In all honesty, I think there was some social stuff going on around that time with people finding out about certain people making themselves co-writers and supposedly exploiting people in Hollywood for financial gain and they were touching on that. Genius mentions a book recently (at the time) written by one of the Run DMC guys IIRC.

I understand the progression of AJ as a character. Unfortunately, it's Robert Iler that I didn't care for as an actor in Season 6. His manner of speaking irritates me.
There are certain episodes that feel out of place or sort of filler. "Chasing It" is one in the second half of Season 6. I know that most of the final 9 episodes are designed to paint Tony in a negative, monster-like light but the gambling thing does come out of nowhere.
"Christopher" in Season 4 about the Columbus Day parade is another one that seems like filler and sort of a throw-away episode.
All of that said, The Sopranos blows away anything put to film in the last 25 years. TV, movies, all of it.

I think that was also a political debate at the time so they put it in. They touched on a lot of current stuff (for the time). Robert Iler isn't my favorite but I think its bc we were made to dislike him.
Although, Tony had progressively gotten worse about gambling. The bird feeder, the spec house and wanting Carmella to put his cut on a football game and him not using his own money and getting so upset. I think it was ultimately to drive home the fact that Hesh wasn't even trusting Tony anymore and that was one of the people he respected the most. He went way out of the way to help Hesh in season 1 with Jr., even pulling Johnny Sack into it.
Thats what is so great about this show, and a few others like it, people will be nitpicking and discussing it still in 50 years probably.

I highly recommend the PODA BING PODCAST
Talking Sopranos is really good too. They've had a lot of the main characters and bit players interview there. Richie Aprille, Carmlella, Junior, Janice, Melfi, Meadow...I'm about halfway through it.
Have you listened to this? How does it compare? It's one podcast per episode too.

Bobby might’ve been the only likable character.

He was probably the purest of heart. You could tell it bothered him to whack that guy in the laundromat.
I really liked his character.

Bobby was the most redeeming character in my mind. Also Patsy in a way (did we ever see Patsy kill anyone)? I genuinely can't remember, granted he was shrewd.

No. But he did at some point. Here is the proof: my face is the last one you will see

1) Most AJ subplots. Such a bitch.
I'm not contesting that he is a bitch at all. AJ is a good example of the negative effects of Tony's hypocrisy. He is the mob boss's son but doesn't get any of the experience in that life to level him out. He can never live up to the expectations placed on him by society because Tony tries to shield him from it but there is no way he really could. While it's cringy and kinda boring it's a good part of the story, just needs to be more compact in it's delivery.
Fill that time with more Chrisy and Paulie stories. Can't get enough of them. Perfect buddy dark comedy.

That whole another-person-in-vegas episode went on far too long.
Worst part of the series IMO. Sopranos is my favorite series of all time and I skip right over this part every time.
His depression in season 1 is too strung out. The entire Isabella plot should have been left out.

Tony becoming a degenerate gambler in one episode in the final season.
There are several instances of Tony being out of character in the last few seasons. I feel like they tried to make TOO human at the end.
EDIT: I must have blocked the Veto's gay adventures part out of my mind because I forgot to put it on here. Just why.

I think they were trying to show a descent of his character as a person. He came out of the Junior shooting with a new lease on life. Then due to the issue with Julianna Skiff and probably Bobby kicking his arse at the cabin had totally flipped. He was being portrayed as a monster from that point until AJs suicide attempt. He turned back into a sympathetic, level-headed figure after that point for the last few episodes.
