I watched it last night, even though I knew Opie was gonna die due to reading it here and on FB, it still sucked. I can't wait til Jax gets ahold of the prison guard. They better make that happen this season.

This.

That guard had a terrified look on his face when Jax was talking to him walking down the hall.

The way they are going this season I would not be surprised if that is how they open the show next week.

"I knew this would be a gut-wrenching episode and difficult for people to wrap their brains around, but... [SPOILER ALERT!] the death of Opie will color the rest of the episodes for the rest of the series," he says, before stressing, "It's not a death that will happen in vain."

Explaining how the death will influence the other SAMCRO guys, Sutter explains, "Jax will be greatly influenced by the death of Opie, and perhaps that loss, that emptiness, will color him throughout the rest of the season." He adds, "Of course there'll be a sense of vengeance, something that drives out guys to retaliate, but also the emotional impact that his death will have on the rest of the characters will always be there."

To reporters, Sutter reveals he began thinking about Opie's fate at the end of season 3. "I got to the end of that season and realized there is this circular dynamic happening with Jax and Opie that I felt was very difficult to get out of," he shares.

"This is the first [season] I've had to think about the end game, and knowing where I wanted to get my hero and knowing how I wanted to get there, the road I wanted him to travel," he adds. "And Jax needed that emotional upheaval, that one event that happens in a man's life that can change the course of his destiny - the death of his best friend was [that]."

However, "in the end, when [Hurst] read the script and saw the episodes that follow, he understood the nature of it and the importance of it in the mythology of the show," the showrunner says.

I think the guard realized that he wasn't anything more than a pawn in this and soon as Jax was out, he would have zero power in the situation. And no more backing from Pope either since he would no longer be of use to him.

In other words, that was when the gravity of his situation hit him.

This episode was directed by the guy who played Zobelle in season 2.
And holy shite, that story about Half Sack is real?!

That's interesting to read. We were talking about that after watching this episode and wondering if all the characters lives were mapped out as of season 1 or it was season to season.

Just realized Jax could end up in a Vick-like finale.

Reading that, I can see the reasoning. Opie could have never truly forgiven Jax and/or other Sons for everything and still remained true to the character. It's what separates a series like SOA from a soap opera. Still sucks because he was probably my favorite and IMO one of the main characters that helped sell the MC lifestyle.

I still cant get over why Pope would agree to let Jax/Tig out in the first place.

We have been led to believe he is extremely smart/powerful/whatever, it really just doesnt make sense that he would let out the 2 people who want him dead the most.

Maybe his ego is so big he thinks hes untouchable?

To get a cut of their drug muling money, plus he knows they're extremely weak right now. Probably just looks at them as some "white trash biker gang" anyhow.

Will the cartel let them go to war? I'm sure they would usually call in all the charters, hide the wives and kids and just kill everybody against them. But they don't seem to have that option right now.

I think y'all are underestimating the reach that Pope has.

He is no doubt very powerful, but the cartel scares him and I think that is a big reason he somewhat backed off. He also has to know that the Sons have hundreds of members and connections being major gun runners. I actually think he is trying to make peace in some kind of way, but he did go too far..

I don't think a man of his power would be worried about $50K.

I also think its been made very clear that he recognizes how dangerous Jax & co. are.

50K per shipment, and all he has to do is collect it. Plus, it hurts SAMCRO more than it helps Pope - SAMCRO needs that money.
