Inception looks about 10 times better than this as far as upcoming sci-fi movies go IMO.

you can't go anywhere with that
the key is to focus on you doing boring crap in the middle of nowhere for the first few hours

and from a thematic standpoint, what more can you do with these movies? human/american/white guy goes to kill natives who are in the way of progress. while there, he falls in love with their lifestyle (and usually one of them) and then revolts against progress/humanity/america/white people
Yes you can. While everything has basically done before, symbolism can be blended into a way it never has before on film. You've just got mix the right amount of messages, love, war, retribution, and other symbols.
Also I think from the trailers that there is really only one "bad" guy in the film, and although he may represent some of the dark aspects of human nature, I seriously doubt Cameron is going to completely make the human spirit look evil. I doubt the other humans in the film will share the opinions of the corrupt general (or whoever the hell he is).

"The Chosen One" structure has been done to death, but despite that, the tale can always be told differently and is still one of the most beloved story structures for sci fi and fantasy tales. If they can come up with dozens and dozens of various tales like these, then they can certainly go somewhere with this story.

Agreed. This has been a great year for the Sci-Fi genre. District 9 and Star Trek, were great films,
I wouldn't consider either of those "great" sci-fi films.

and if this is as good as it says it will be, then this will be one of the greatest years for the genre.
Hold on now, let's not take it that far. Sci-fi, being one of the original genres, has had plenty of great years. Even if this movie was very very good, I wouldn't make that claim

I'm looking forward to this one and The Road.

I completely agree that there is very little "new" in terms of story telling. I agree that every story has been told and that it depends completely on HOW you do it.
At the same time, I am tired of hearing that America sucks, Western civilization sucks, etc. and if that is all the story is (which it looks like) then yes it's a tired story.

Meh. We're going to have to agree to disagree on the current state of Science Fiction cinema.
For example, someone cited "Minority Report". Phillip K. Dick must be turning over in his grave over how they've been butchering his work lately.

please put your money where your mouth is and tell us what books you've read that are so much better than movies?
Vernon Vigne?
Orson Scott Card?
F Paul Wilson?
seriously..you want to cite 'good sci fi' so put some examples down and dont pull up the tired cliche that is philip dick/blade runner/minority report.
i hate to agree with sfp but he's got a point. it hasn't even been a year since that other god-awful animated movie where the 'bad' general and humans were blowing up the aliens that lived in the plants. so bad i cant even remember the name of it..but same story...protaganist injuried while attacking natives..falls in love..fights AGAINST the evil general/military complex..and the obligatory "ancient ones" awakening at the right moment to help the poor outnumbered aliens throw off the chains of their humans oppressors.
big
fricking
yawn.

Here it is..god..movie so awful I couldn't remember its name
LINK
Yep, about sums it up.
eta
Is that from the godawful "Terra" or "Avatar". I can't tell.

In the animated Terra, residents of a peaceful country village look up into the night sky and notice a peculiar star pattern. What could it mean? … The worst comes true: The object is an alien ship, planning to launch an attack and claim the pastoral world and its abundant resources for a race of extraterrestrials who have destroyed their home world with war, greed and pollution.
Yep, about sums it up.

They likely ripped off Avatar though, since Avatar has been in pre-production since the beginning of the decade. HOW they did Terra was terrible. Avatar may not have the same fate.

symbolism is a bunch of bullshite, especially when you're dealing with a half-real, half-cartoon, sci fi movie

there aren't many symbols you can really add

progress/humanity is the "bad guy"

avatar is actually a complete ripoff of some sci fi novel

Me
I'd agree. But it was a good movie nonetheless. Maybe not an exact replica of the book, but that's not the only way to measure a good film.
Blade Runner was also pretty bad if you only consider the source. As a movie, one of the best sci fi films of all-time.
The Godfather was also a lame novel, but great movie.

What would make it better? Have you seen everything mentioned?
I mean if you are into "heady" science fiction, Children of Men was pretty damn good.

It has been a pretty decent decade for sci fi on the small screen.

I do not know but I will heavilly rely on reviews and word of mouth before I see the blue people.

Most movies are a ripoff of some novel

but most don't proclaim themselves to be a completely original story while doing so

i gotta admit, the 'giant blue guy scene' in the trailer gave me flashbacks back to the watchmen movie.
i wonder if we will be treated to a great big blue penis in avatar as well?
eta before you watchmen fanboys snarl; i'm kidding..i read the comic back back when it came out long before half of you nitwits were even born so dont start. ironically, i won a copy of the comic from KLSU
