So for those who don't know, August Underground is one of the most renowned extreme/banned movies ever. It's done in found footage style and is possibly the most extremely violent movie (for sure not a film) ever made. This is the plot summary from Wiki:

quote:

Peter, a serial killer, invites his camera-wielding accomplice into his basement, where he is holding a woman named Laura captive. Peter and his unnamed accomplice torture and humiliate her at their leisure.

It was made by a guy who, IIRC, had experience in FX and was basically a Tom Savini wannabe, and he wanted to make a realistic movie. I have never seen this movie, but apparently the gore is very realistic and fits with the shitty style. Basically as close to a snuff film as you can get.

So this movie was obviously never given a real release, and I don't think it's ever been released in theaters. Basically the director would travel to horror festivals and sell VHS copies out of his trunk. He was actually arrested in Canada for "transporting obscene materials".

So, given that background, I was scrolling on Vudu for what they had for their $5 Fridays, and at the bottom what do I see? August Underground. I googled and apparently there was a release late in 2023 of a Blu Ray version ( Amazon LINK). Now it's on streaming.

So I just post this because I know there are some fans of extreme content on here, and I'm not sure how many of them know about this movie b/c it's been relatively obscure and very niche for so long. This one is up there with The Bunny Game (2011) or Pig (2010) (which was only shown once and I sometimes think is a rumor and not an actual movie) in terms of internet lore/obscurity. These movies are in the tier of the Horror movie iceberg chart before movies of real death or just shite/punking porn.

[Edited out the picture, but it's the disturbing movie iceberg]

Note: I don't really watch these extreme movies. The concept just fascinates me. I've only seen 2 movies on the 3rd tier (Martyrs and Tetsuo) and none past that except Traces of death.

Watching torture for torture's sake is beyond disturbing. This seems like that's all it is; it's nothing more than scratching the itch of some weird torture fetish. Is there a difference between snuff films and this other than this doesn't show a real torture and murder? This is a hard no for me, and I like horror movies.

The deepest one on that iceberg I’ve watched is The House that Jack Built. I wouldn’t want to go any lower, but I recommend that film. It’s not something like Human Centipede 2 (the only other one I’ve seen in that tier) that is just gross to be gross. It’s a well-constructed adaptation of Dante’s Inferno, but man is it brutal. Had one scene gone on even a second longer, I would have turned it off. Matt Dillon is the lead and it also stars Uma Thurman.

One day I'll watch that. I just have a lot of movies ahead of it on the list.

The only reason I ever went deeper is because I was a 90s kid and there was all the mystique around Faces of Death. Finally saw it in high school and it was laughably bad b/c the big scenes were clearly fake. So years later I saw Traces at a video store and rented it just to see and confirmed it was not FOD

I never really dabbled in this stuff. Didn't go to orgish or anything.

August Underground is garbage bullshite

The House That Jack Built may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but god damn if that’s not a beautifully made movie, even the extreme parts.

I have to say that No Vaseline: The Great Porn Swindle is a traditional family favorite around the Christmas season.

I've watched Youtube videos where they do PG-ish descriptions of as many on the bottom tiers as you can imagine.

It's mostly random Nazi or fetish sex stuff. Lots of shitting and puking and bondage sex.

I was familiar with the reputations of quite a few of those titles on that iceberg. I even know a filmmaker behind one of them. I hadn't heard of a few of the shockumentaries, however, so I did a little dive on them. I couldn't watch most of Africa Addio.

Vomit Enema Ecstasy 2 is one of those rare cases where a sequel is much better than the original

I find the topic of these movies/tiers of movies fascinating, although have no interest in watching them. The lowest on that list I've seen is The House that Jack Built, and I felt dirty after watching it.

I'm curious, are there any movies on tiers equal or lower than The House that Jack Built that have actors I'd recognize? Or would Matt Dillon probably be the biggest one?

The House that Jack Built was boring as frick. I was pretty disappointed in it. Not even sure what I was expecting, but it was just kind of a mess.

I remember Faces and then the Traces of Death videos. A buddy of mine and I used to rent those sometimes. I’ve always been fascinated by morbid shite (even if I didn’t love watching it).

I’ve only ever even heard of a small % of those movies in that chart. I don’t mind “fricked up” type movies at times, but sometimes the twisted shite for no other reason than being twisted doesn’t do anything for me. shite like Salo or Eraserhead (which I’ve only seen clips of both) are objectively bad movies for me. And the torture porn and puke porn type of shite is just gross and unappealing to the Nth degree IMO.

I've never seen Salo but I basically know what happens. It at least has artistic merit as a commentary on fascism, and is modeled after the work by the Marquis de Sade. The extremity has a point.

There is a movie I own that's a real movie (I haven't seen it yet) that's supposed to have some truly fricked up shite, BUT it's a war movie about the atrocities of the German occupation of Russia (Come and See).

The House that Jack Built is based off Dante's Inferno.

But yeah after the tier of movies with real death (the Traces of Death tier) it's just stupidity. I do kind of want to go watch that YouTube video again though.

I'm the same way. I'll read a plot summary typically, to get the gist. There are a lot of disturbing movies that aren't on the iceberg that are real movies (unlike things like August Underground, Pig, etc. and the tiers below shockumentaries).

There are a few guys who consistently make fricked up movies for...reasons, like LVT and Gaspar Noé (who most of you know likely for Irreversible, but did other insane shite like I Stand Alone).

Other than faces of death I’ve never heard of anything below the third tier.

The worst thing I’ve ever seen was House of 1000 corpses and just a little bit.

My firstborn was a terrible sleeper so I watched many random things at 2 AM holding him in a recliner. I got about an hour of that and then contemplated if I’d ever be happy again.

But also I won’t watch the Se7en again because I’m a gaping front hole. A movie doesn’t have to end happy and the bad guy can win but I just can’t handle complete despair.

Yep I’ll go to wiki and read the plot/background of the movie and say yeah, nope.

Are these directors on watch lists? What leads these folks to do this shite? I’ve also always wondered how they find actors/actresses to participate in it as well. Like what went through the Human Centipede actors/actress minds? Was it “this is it! This is my ticket to stardom!”? I’m afraid to even look up the wiki summaries on those titles in the abyss.

That boggles my mind too. Especially kids. I've read a couple of wiki synopses of movies mentioned in this thread, and several have child parts. What arse clown parent would let their kid act in movies all about sex, rape, murder, torture, etc?

Yeah. I'll sometimes look up clips just to see what the movie is like.

Some of these are legit movies and are just weird arthouse/sex/exploitation stuff (typically from Europe) and some are like hand camera crap.

I'm sure some are

A lot of them have 1 credit (if there wasn't a sequel) to their name

Don't. After re-watching this video and looking up the iceberg on reddit, a lot on that lower tier is illegal. I removed the picture for that reason.

You could probably get your violence & gore fix in just a few minutes by watching the real thing on Krud Plug.
