It is extremely difficult for a man to contract HIV from a woman via normal vaginal intercourse. There was a period, mostly in the 90's, where there was an extremely effective campaign of misconception designed to convince the populace that HIV/AIDS was a serious threat to heterosexuals. It never was at least in the West.

I don't think Jenny dies of aids in the book. Forrest was more of a drug user than Jenny was. It is possible he got aids partying with Kenny Stabler or while working as janitor of a strip club.
