It can be a shitty show, but still acknowledge that it will likely run forever.
The show costs nearly nothing to produce

Talent gets paid very little

Even if 6 people were watching, it would stay on the air

It fills a time slot nobody wants, and costs nothing

Additionally, “SNL” finds a significant portion of its audience on social media, where Season 50 and the anniversary special reached a total of 7.7 billion views

Think this is big for it. I haven’t watched an episode in years but I’ve watched certain skits that come up on my feed like the beavis and butthead one, Jake from State Farm, the Mario kart one, etc.

It’s mainly bad, but they do have an occasional skit that’s pretty funny. The Walton Goggins skit about guns as the 2nd amendment was great. The good news is any legitimately funny one will be all over social media so I don’t have to watch.

Che and Jost need to go, it's time. Give weekend update to Longfellow. He's got the look and personality for it, and hasn't found a role elsewhere on the show.

Che and Jost still got it though. They are the best duo the shows ever had IMO. Norm is still the GOAT.

But if they did go, Longfellow would be the right choice. But it’d suck to lose him in sketches if he only does weekend update, which is usually what happens.

Quite the opposite, it costs $~4 million per episode

OK.

Dude, please read more carefully. Clearly says Season 50 and the anniversary special. If you're confused about how YouTube works, that's on you.

According to your link, that is because of Lorne's fee.

Wow.

Cast isn't bad minus Yang. Dude ruins every sketch he is in. . .or at the very least is the worst part of every sketch he is in.

SNL is not going away but the big rumor is Lorne will be turning it over to someone else

Saw something that said that Colin Jost is in line to take over when Lorne calls it quits.

Among adults ages 18-49, “SNL” was the No. 1 broadcast series of the 2024-2025 season, excluding sports and news programming, and the No. 1 broadcast or cable comedy for the sixth season running.

What is it really competing against here?

So it’s the #1 broadcast series for younger demos (are broadcast series in general doing well?) … and the #1 comedy series on broadcast and cable (are there other comedy series?)

the YouTube/streaming numbers are what matters now, the 50th anniversary special is a one off for this year. sustainable?

Youtube saved SNL. Younger audiences would never have watched it live regardless. Gen-X and older millennials can click on sketches, watch 20-30 seconds or so, and move on if it's bad.

I am not really a big fan of SNL, but I will watch 20-30 seconds of most any SNL sketch that I come across. Yet I have not watched an SNL broadcast or watched any SNL sketch on television in a decade.

Really wish y'all would read the actual article.

Cast that need to go:
Jane Wickline-one note, ugly, not funny. Absolute nepo baby trash.
Mikey Day - enjoy him, but it’s time. He’s a great straight man, but JAJ can take those roles.
Chloe Fineman - was she even on the show the last few weeks?
Heidi - another one that it’s just time to go
Devon - does fine when he gets stuff, but obviously doesn’t write well for himself. His stand up is good, time to go back
Bowen - frick HIM. He blows, obviously.
Ego - time go egress Ego.

Cast to keep:
JAJ - the best political impression SNL has had in a very, very long time. He’s consistently funny, and I am surprised that I haven’t gotten tired of him. They’ve done a great job of leaning into the fact that Trump is inherently funny and just taken it a little overboard.
Dismukes- great reactions and delivery. Very funny
Sarah Sherman - she’s got two more years where she could get really, really catch fire in the show. If she could find a character that worked, and not just silly update bits, she is golden. She does break in like every sketch, but her enthusiasm shines through.
Ashley Padilla - so freaking good. Beat rookie they’ve had in a while. Started slow, but really came through and was excellent when she got material. Going to be excellent for years on the show.
Longfellow - the idea that Longfellow is actually on SNL just makes me smile. He’s just a weird dude with weird, interesting sketch ideas. The water slide sketch is Top 5 of the last decade.
Keenan - sure, why not? He’s a joy and obviously a great co-worker.

Weekend Update
Che/Jost are too self-indulgent to not have acknowledged they were leaving so I fear they are back for another year. I think it should be Longfellow’s job to lose.

Please Don’t Destroy:
I hope they’re back. They didn’t have enough opportunities, but they are coming off the movie over the summer and it looks like Lorne isn’t burning them out. The Lonely Island guys have talked about how hard it was the churn out consistent digital shorts every week along with sketches. Hopefully they stay on an every other week schedule.

I think we’re going to see a huge cast turnover, and honestly, the show needs it.

I would be ok with that. As long as it isn’t Tina Fey. The show sucked arse when she was head writer.

Reading the new book about the life of Lorne Michaels and the history of SNL

It’s incredible and I’m only up to 1981

712 million views? How are they calculating this? That’s a huge number
