I finished Season 1 last night. I love the show and the flashback to what happened to Standish's husband was shocking. Now I see why he is an old grump and hates MI5.
So I'm all in on this. Started the S2 Ep1 last night too. It does bother that the rot in MI5 didn't get exposed and they just continue on. But I understand that is the primary component of the show. The small outside group going up against the big corrupt MI5.

It's a great show, easily one of the most entertaining on atm. They manage to shoehorn right wing extremism (as if that's what is troubling the UK) into most of the seasons, but foreign terrorists are portrayed as well.

Having watched a lot of British tv they're cynical as hell about their security services (5/6). I don't know how corrupt they are but the perception of the average citizen appears to be that they're a necessary evil and they have no problem doing wet work on home soil, whether it's foreigners, innocent civilians or guilty civilians. Anything for the greater good, as they see it.

He was, but I'm pretty sure they were screwing. The books make her past a lot more explicit; she was a somewhat functional alcoholic who was hot and could survive by sleeping around.

I didn't pick that piece of info up. When was that discussed. In her flashbacks I assumed they were together considering she walked thru the house like she owned and barged into the bathroom. I guess I never picked up on his last name to draw a distinction.
Thanks for that piece of info, I missed it completely.

I like the way it starts out but then it just gets way too unbelievable. Too many people willing to commit murder in plain sight. Too many people knowing the evil plots and allowing them to happen. I don't think I finished season 3. A lot of sloppy writing. Hell, from the get go, the idea a guy was a pariah for a failed training mission in which NOBODY in the whole fricking airport helped him, that was just fricking stupid. Of course Oldman is great. I just think the writing was shite at times and I finally tossed in the towel.

She was his assistant, and in that capacity I think she did all kinds of personal stuff for him, which is why she seemed so at home in his apartment. I read all of the books and never got the impression, in spite of her drunken history, that their relationship was anything other than platonic. Charles Partner hired her because she was a drunk and as a drunk would be less likely to notice what he was doing.

That was her modus operandi, sleeping with her superiors. It's speculative but especially on the show she was obviously closer to him than a normal secretary/boss relationship.
