I'm assuming more and more will be revealed as the last ep and future seasons unfold.

I think that’s just a reflection on real life. The people that keep the power on are treated less than, and eventually the people that keep the lights on get fed up and use what power they have to make a point.

I think this is key for great sci-fi content

The archer chick might be a worse actor than Common

Agreed. I think the best sci-fi has some grounding and for lack of a better term, can be dirty.

It's probably why I like BSG (2004) so much. It faces and tackles the smaller issues that make it feel real (even with the sci-fi hot chick robot clones ).

Btw, I haven't chimed in on the angry black chick thing, but holy shite they ran that trope into the ground in E9. They literally have her yelling at Billings when he was offering to help, then slowly come to his side - then she does the exact same thing to Lukas, yelling at him until eventually helping him. Such poor and easy writing IMO. No nuance at all. And I don't blame the actress for this one, seems like she's doing exactly what's on the page.

She's not good, but the character is so one note. Common is playing a supposedly complex character, and his lack of ability is making the character feel one-note.

I haven't read books either but I bet there is some central hub where the people that spoke to him over the intercom system are. I would assume all tunnels lead out from there and into the other Silos.

quote:

The reason the one silo is flooded is someone already tried or told others which they were supposed to as he was directed which is basically a failsafe to keep people from know they are connected.

I would agree with this too. Obviously the fail safe is flood the tunnels so no one can prove there are actually tunnels. I still find it hilarious that no one can swim.

While they haven't needed to swim for generations, it's easy to accept why they can't swim for that reason.

But as a person with a brain, i don't understand how it's not a natural reaction to start moving your arms and legs and figure it out real quick, instead of sinking like a dumbass.
If we can throw animals in the water that weren't ever taught how to swim in any manner, and they can swim, then there's no reason a human can't figure it out the first time they are thrown in the water as an adult.

We panic and overthink things. In lifeguard training, you're taught that when approaching someone drowning and they are facing you, you dive down below them before getting within arm's reach, then come up from behind them before going into your attempt at cross-arm control, because if they see you coming within arm's reach they're very likely to grab onto you like they are trying to climb atop a raft (thus putting you both in even more danger). It's one thing for someone who has never swum nor learned how to be in about neck-deep water, it's another for them to be suddenly dropped into what seems to be a bottomless pit of water.

Yep. People would be surprised by the number of drowning victims that are actually the rescuer of a potential drowner. The rescuer will do enough to save the potential drowner and then end up drowning.

The better question is why has no one attempted to teach or learn?

I get they would never "need" to swim..but...ya know except all the people that work in mechanical at the bottom of the Silo where there is a massive pool of water.

I am wondering if a lot of these questions are answered in the book series but people not knowing how to swim would ensure that the "safeguard" would be effective.

Just realized the finale is this Friday, makes me sad and slightly hoping for a banger of an episode but reserving myself since I am 100% sure there will be another cliffhanger ending.

If I had to guess, the safeguard is a bit more dramatic than flooding the silos. Solo’s silo didn’t completely flood in years. My guess is they have a way to remotely open the silo doors to flood it with poison air.

I do agree that the tunnel leads to the 51st silo, which I assume is populated by the descendants of the creators of the Pact.

Unfortunately, I agree I think we are going to get a massive cliff hanger. I also don't think that we will find out what the "safeguard" is till mid next season at the earliest, even though they made it pretty obvious IMO. I would only assume the safeguard is shutting off the pumps to flood the silo, mind you that mechanical doesn't/can't control, Shirley hinted at this in the last episode "Pumps that mechanical doesn't know about?"

Probably why they have the tunnels so they can access them and provide maintenance.

Along with that, to quote the old adage: shite rolls downhill.

Where this comes into play is in part of the physical setup of the silo. Mechanical is at the very bottom of the silo, even being below the level where garbage/recycling is handled.

This is a great, subtle symbolism for how the society of the silo stratifies itself (which all societies do to varying extents) and (ostensibly) how the creators of the silo wanted the inhabitants to not realize who was really in charge. If so, this would explain why IT is in the bottom of the upper levels (on level 19), placing it within the security of the upper levels but below the Cafeteria, Judicial, the Sheriff's Office, Porter Dispatch, etc. so as to subtly state "this group is not nearly as important as these other offices" even though the head of IT is really who runs the silo. As a footnote, the janitorial closet and watcher room is on level 20.

Isn’t that exactly what happened when Juliette’s air line got cut?
