Should studios just start releasing 2 versions of a movie simultaneously?

So this is my semi-annual "I"m high on stimulants and close to insanity while taking a study break in Club Middleton during an all-nighter and had a random stupid thought" thread

Basically, they would make 2 versions of the same Jason Statham vehicle. One by Guy Ritchie and the other by some studio hack. They would have different plots and different climax's; maybe even a different star. IDK!!!!!!

Don't like one version? Go see the other!

Yes, there are a lot of flaws associated with this idea but would people buy (hehe) into it? Could it possibly work?!?!?!? Would it eliminate the need for remakes 5 years down the line?

I've always wanted to see what two different crews would do with the same material. How similar/different would the final product be...?

I was just thinking last night they should make an "R" rated version for every watered down PG-13 movie they make.

why would a studio do that? It would confuse the public and cannibalize the profits.

And two different crews would certainly give it a very different look especially in the Art Direction

Among other things, I think this is the biggest problem. They make the remake 5 years down the road to generate a similar level of profit. Having the films run congruently would just eat into each films profits. Most people would not see both.

It happens every now and then, very similiar movies coming out at the same time. Not breaking news I'm bringing here obviously.

I think the problem with this idea is that studios would not really want to do this. It's a huge risk. 25 critics go see both and clearly one is better then the other and word gets out then the other is no doubt going to flop.

Oh, it happens all the time. And, I'm not even talking about those shity B-movie knockoffs. But, it is different studios, not the same studio making two movies. I think there was a thread listing near identical movies that came out the same years.

A current one that comes to mind is the two Snow White movies coming out next year.

First 2 I thought of. Both are pretty good IMO but Tombstone has more balls and has comedic moments. Wyatt Earp was more of a traditional biopic. I actually like Costner as Earp better than Kurt Russell.

I can see the comic book movies doing this since they've been issuing comics with different covers for years now.

I guess to get a little more theoretical with this: it happens already since all art is basically a reconfiguring of itself.

Must.Resist.From.Getting.Into.A.WyattEarp.Tombstone.Debate.

I enjoy both though. Tombstone is definitely my favorite though. It's just a great popcorn flick thats funny and has great characters/lines that I can watch anytime. I can see liking Costner over Russel but I prefer Doc/Curly bill/ringo and a few others better in Tombstone. Mark Madsons Vergil was much better. Costner just tried to make an epic and didn't really do it that good. I love some backstory but we get too much of Wyatt being a puss and never really see a badazz Wyatt. Then we get three hours of movie and get like the crappiest ok coral moment imaginable. All that build up to the most important part of the movie and then your like "wait, that was it?" Like I say, I like both, I just have more complaints with Wyatt Earp.

I couldn't resist talking about em.
