I just finished the first episode and didn’t realize it was based on the character from the movie. Should I go back and watch the movie? It’s on Netflix also.

You should definitely watch One flew over the Cuckoos Nest because it's an awesome film, one of the best ever. No other considerations needed.

Lol yes it's one of the all time greats. It's Jack Nicholson's career defining performance as well.

No need to rewatch it in order to watch the series.
ETA: I misread the question. Yes, you should watch the movie. It really doesn’t connect with the series at all though.

It’s one of the 20 best films ever made IMO. Go watch it.

watch the always sunny in Philidelphia homage instead

You have to watch Cuckoos at some point, it is simply required viewing.
There is zero need to watch Cuckoos prior to Ratched. One Ratched is prior to Cuckoos in time and two there really isn't any significant link between the two outside of just the character. I view both as stand-alone works.

Don't give a shite about Ratched, but One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest is one of the greatest movies ever created. I've seen it about 20 times, but I plan on seeing it again ASAP. It's that freaking good.

I figured as soon as I hit submit that main response would be “you need to watch it regardless” so I’m 15 minutes in to Cuckoos nest now.

I am not a fan of OFOtCN personally.
But it’s an amazing film and you should watch it for the sake of great films. It’s one of those films that just leaves me feeling icky, but I also know that it’s an important piece of film history.
and of course you should before you watch a series based on it.
Numbnuts.

There’s really no similarities between the original Nurse Ratched and the one from the show Ratched.
They’re both nurses, that’s about it.
But yes you should watch One flew over the cuckoos nest because it’s a great movie, or better yet read the book by Ken Kesey

Not that I need to pile on since you’re already watching, but this film won:
Best Picture
Best Director
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Actor
Best Actress
In case anyone was still in doubt about seeing it.
Let us know your thoughts when you finish in an hour or so, though.

They are completely unrelated, so it doesn't matter. Ryan Murphy is just buttfricking the corpse of a classic trope.

I find the show to be awful

I had never really considered watching Cuckoos nest until I read about it on here. Watched last week and really enjoyed it.
I honestly don't understand why Ratched wasn't just named something else and pitched as it's own concept. I don't really see the parallel. I don't mind Ratched stand alone. When you try to relate it to Cuckoos nest its harder to swallow.
