The late, great Alan Rickman. But to my generation he'll always be Hans Gruber.

Snape is a great character. Perfectly cast.

Wow I never put that connection together haha

JK wrote Snape perfectly. "Always." sent young PTJ into quick the emotional roller coaster thinking back to Snape's actions throughout the entire storyline.

I couldn't have higher expectations for a character going from book to movie, and Alan absolutely crushed it. Fantastic from start to finish.

James is catching too much heat here. He was 16 years old and you see one of his worst moments.

By all accounts he was courageous and a good person. We do things when we are 16 we are not proud of.

As for Snape, I do think at times it is a bit flimsy that he did what he did because he was in love with a girl who friendzoned him. But its a satisfying conclusion for him.

I wish he and Harry had had an actual moment where Snape was better to him.

I dont' worry about HP sort of emotional set up, weird "why didn't they use time travel" type questions because the series is intended to deliver much more visceral examples love, loyalty, friendship, and sense of wonder. Looking too closely at it isn't the point, you just sort of take what is given in each book essentially separately and enjoy a very well crafted 3 act story.

Also, I agree I would have liked to see some sort of on-page / on-screen moment with Harry and Severus, I have a hard time imagining what that would have looked like or how it would have played though

I know different actors can play younger versions of characters, but without Alan Rickman, ... I guess it can be done, but it would just be nice if he had been around for at least a brief reprise. One more time.

Man, I can’t believe it’s been 4 years since he passed.

I've often wondered what would have happened if Harry went up to Snape after seeing what James did and apologize for the way his father treated him. You know the whole, no one deserves to be bullied and such, and a promise to take Snape's class more serious and such...

Snape obviously would have blown him over and told him to get out his office or whatnot at first, but maybe have him ease up a little on Harry... Who knows though.

Yea, James kind of gets shite on because we largely get his portrayal mostly from Snape's point of view. Did he bully Snape and was he an a-hole when he was a kid? Definitely so.

However, he also befriended and offered a home to a homeless Sirius, befriended not only helped improve the life of a Werewolf, but also helped keep the secret. By all accounts, he was a genuinely empathetic and brilliant Wizard as he grew up.

He was a far more complex character than we ever really get to see. He was absolutely a dick to Snape, but then again he also had to constantly deal with him trying to steal his girlfriend, curse him, and probably at some point tried to use Septum Sempra on him at some point.

This is actually probably the most realistic glimpse into who Snape is. He is a vengeful, spiteful person and always has been. He punishes Harry for no other reason than he reminds him of James. Snape wasn't a good person. Very compelling character and it makes him all the more real, but he was an a-hole.

I think he also always saw Harry's reactions to him as arrogance, when in reality they weren't. Harry always fought back against any unfairness. Snape was not that type of person. He would have just taken it, then gone back and licked his wounds and done something after the fact. The fact Harry constantly stood up to him wasn't arrogance, but more of a natural instinct that he was being unjustly treated and punished for actions he didn't even know about.

I have a feeling we'll get an Amazon or HBO Harry Potter series in the next 10 years. My pick for the role of Severus would be Adam Driver. He looks the part and I think he could nail the role.

ETA: I see I'm not the only one with the Adam Driver idea. Make it happen, HBO

Snape is probably the most important character in the story outside of Harry and Dumbledore. He is the Swiss Army Knife of the overarching story.

His story is the guiding path for redemption that helps Harry make the right decision in saving Malfoy, which directly affects his encounter with Voldemort later in book 7. More obvious, he is the snake in the grass that Voldemort couldn't see because of his blindness to love, which is a repeated theme for his downfall. He also serves as the apparent villain in both book 1, part of 6, and most of 7.

He fits into so many parts of the story and is, in a lot of ways, the glue for the entire series.

Somewhat related is the news that Alan Rickman left behind diaries of his experiences as an actor. Including his many, many Harry Potter years. Next year, a book from those diaries will appear. I'm looking forward to reading several parts of his career.
