From several sites within the last 24 hours:

..two years ago, it was reported that Narcos: Mexico star Tenoch Huerta would play an undisclosed villain in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. It was quickly speculated that Huerta would be playing T'Challa's most bitter enemy, Namor the Sub-Mariner. A year later, The Illuminerdi revealed that Huerta would indeed be playing the Scourge of the Seven Seas, but with a twist. To match the casting of Huerta, the entire culture of Atlantis from the comics would instead be based around Mayan culture instead of Ancient Greece, as is typical for the mythical underwater city.

====

Rumors are swimming about Marvel’s own aquatic antagonist Namor the Sub-Mariner. The character is set to make his MCU debut in November’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where he’ll be played by Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta (Narcos: Mexico, The Forever Purge). The son of a human sea captain and a princess of the undersea kingdom of Atlantis, Namor’s origin story will be changed from its ancient Greek roots to one of Mayan culture. It’s an adaptation that makes sense given Huerta’s casting, and it also opens up opportunities for Latinx representation within the MCU, which is nearly non-existent.

======
According to entertainment website Chippu, Atlantis will be traded for a Mexican/Central American submerged city, with Namor seeking help from Wakanda to keep the sunken city hidden from humans. The change in location also helps differentiate Namor from his DC Comics counterpart Aquaman, whose own origin story is based in Atlantis

=======

...while Namor will play a major role in Wakanda Forever, the film will offer a new take on the character. The MCU Namor will apparently not come from Atlantis, but from a submerged city in Central America. Namor will still, however, be the son of a human man and a queen from said city as he is in the comics.

In other words, fans probably shouldn’t expect Atlantis to be part of the MCU. Instead, Marvel and the Wakanda Forever creative team appear to have come up with a new underwater home for Namor, one that lines up with Tenoch Huerta’s Mexican roots. Of course, this is just a rumor for now...By moving Namor’s home to Central America, Wakanda Forever can make it feel culturally specific and authentic in the same way Wakanda itself did in Black Panther.

So... what would make Namor care about Wakanda if his home base is in the gulf of Mexico?

That's a long swim.

I thought per the map on some SHIELD wall that Atlantis was out in the Mid Atlantic. And wasn't Namor always depicted as sort of Asian looking? Least, that's how I remember it.

No way in hell they show Wakanda as a enemy of the Planet. Wakanda is perfect in every way and can do no wrong.

Lame reason. Namor seems to be one of the few old-school characters that DC copied from Marvel.

I hope the Mayan/Aztecan Atlanteans perform ritualistic sacrifices.

I can understand their desire to make a change to the origin story, and these are decent excuses.

Marketing reasons:
Greece is a tiny nation with a small population. Latin America has over a half a billion people, and that’s not including those in the U.S. with Mexican and Latin American ancestry. A Mexican superhero appeals to a larger audience and opens the door for expansion into that market.

Woke reasons:
Greece is the cradle of Western Civilization. However, according to the MCU, Wakanda is the home of the ideal modern and utopian society. Now Mayan society will be the Wakanda counterpart in the Americas.
America would be great if it wasn’t for those awful Europeans colonizing the Continents.
