Agreed.

Also: Dr. Tongue, Mel Slirrup, Edith Prickley, Tex and Edna Boyle....on and on.

Here's one of my absolute all-time, laugh out loud SCTV bits:

Mel's Rockpile Macarthur's Park....

Don't know why, but this absolute does me in....

I'm surprised Dave Thomas didn't break out from SCTV like some of the other stars.

He gave Hollywood a shot with that sitcom starring... Was her name Brett Butler?

Overall though he seemed satisfied staying in his Canadian comfort zone, like several SCTV cast members

a horifically, epically unfunny show

However the musical guests were often great

HERE is a Best Of special that aired on ABC after Candy hit it big (scroll down to #22). It can serve as an intro for newbs.

HERE is the classic Christmas special, w/the Neil Simon spoof and Johnny LaRue demanding a crane shot. It might be the 2nd GOAT Christmas special (after "Christmas With The Lettermans", the undisputed numero uno).

There are other classic episodes, such as the Godfather parody, Soviet TV taking over the station, Zontar the Thing from Venus, The Bowery Boys Go To Vietnam (w/Robin Williams), the great Ocean's 11 takeoff, and their brilliant parody of The Grapes Of Wrath, maybe the GOAT movie spoof ever on TV. But the above pair of links will do for a start.

The "problem" w/SCTV is so many of the references are specifically geared toward baby boomers. I'm just out of that demo, but I'm sort of an amateur semi-expert on old TV, so I get most of the jokes. But many people, especially younger people, may be mystified by a lot of the humor. IMHO this is the reason SCTV has lapsed into a sort of semi-obscurity, despite the presence of John Candy.

SCTV was funny. But no where near as good as original cast or 89-95 snl.

One viewing of "Midnight Cowboy II - 3D" would confirm this.

Different shows, though. SNL was live with very little pre-taped segments back when it was good. I still give SCTV the nod. Just talent up and down the whole cast. My favorites:
The Schmenge Brothers - Polka Sensations, Cabbage Rolls and Coffee!!
Also, Andrea Martin was criminally underrated- Prini Sclerosi, Edith Prickly, etc.
