The film is slated to be a soft reboot of the franchise that will hand the series off to another group of actors, however the original trio (Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courtney Cox) will reprise their roles - albeit as supporting characters.

The plot of the film is believed to be the following: "Scream 5 will center around a character named Sara who returns to her hometown after a mysterious figure commits a horrific crime. Sara looks to find out who this unknown person is."

And finally, a breakdown of the new characters has been released:

quote:

Sara: Sara is 24 years old and described as smart and caring. She left her hometown when she turned eighteen. However, a troubled past forces her to rely on medication or else she doesn’t feel sane. Our source describes her as a former “teenage bad girl” who now works at Costco and is in a steady relationship with a man.

Teresa: Teresa is 18-years-old and Sara’s younger sister. Having been estranged from her sister for several years, she’s heartbroken over Sara leaving her to contend with their bad home life.

Ryan: Ryan is Sara’s 25-year-old boyfriend. He’s sweet and kind. He also works at Costco. He cares deeply for Sara and is “sensitive to her feelings”

Layla: Layla is an 18-year-old artsy girl with pink hair and is Cal’s girlfriend – as well as one of Teresa’s closest friends.

Maude: Maude is a Hispanic 18-year old who is confident and outspoken. She’s Cal’s twin sister and is described as “having no filter”. An example is that she thinks Layla dyed her hair pink because Layla is a boring person and is attempting to not be boring. Apparently, Maude lets her know this. Ouch – maybe she just likes pink hair?

Annie: Annie is an 18-year-old who is “tough with a sarcastic edge”. She’s “Teresa’s girlfriend of one year”. She’s very protective of Teresa and very much dislikes Sara.

Will: Will is seventeen-years-old. He’s book smart and is one of Teresa’s good friends. He does not want to get in trouble because he is a good kid.

Cal: Cal is Maude’s twin brother. He’s 18, Hispanic and athletic. He’s Layla’s boyfriend and “wants to take the relationship to the next level”. Knowing teenagers, we can guess what he means. He’s confident and hopes things go his way.

Scream and Scream 2 are two of the best slasher films you will ever see. Scream 3 is not good but isn't as bad as people like to make it out to be. Scream 4 was one of the better slasher films of the last decade.

Are they going to change who did the murders? Not only was Scream a slasher, it was sort of a whodunit. Just curious what route they take.

Has this ever worked in the history of movies? I feel like it always bombs.

Yes. They are all very good with the original being a masterpiece of slasher horror and basically revitalized the entire genre.

They get progressively worse but 1 is a top tier horror film that reignited the genre when it was dead in the water

How did Scream 4 do? It was essentially the same thing, no?

Wonder if they'll go the same route at the first one as far as the "killer" goes

Yeah, no. Any true fan of the Scream franchise will always rank Scream 3 last. Scream 4 was a welcomed return to form for the franchise, though it fell short of the first two movies.

I thought it was okay but it clearly didn’t work in the sense of “handing the franchise off” to another group of people

Right but it focuses more on Emma Roberts and Rory Culkin than the trio from the originals.

SPOILERS Scream 4

And it wasn’t designed to “hand off” the franchise to new characters, for obvious reasons.

Because that was never its intent.

I never really implied it was. I was just responding to the question.

I just can’t think of an example where the passing of the torch thing worked for a franchise

Likely because there are very few franchises that ever did it that way. Generally speaking most franchises end before they can "pass the torch" while other franchises just reboot themselves without acknowledging previous films.

The MCU is really the only major franchise that has done it and they're only now just beginning that transition. Ghostbusters will be attempting it in the next movie after the failure of their hard reboot with Kristen Wiig and company.

Sara = Sidney Prescott
Will = Randy (red herring)
Ryan & Cal = Billy & Stu (actual killers)

All the others are filler characters to draw in the minority audience.
