All of the really scary ones are already mentioned but on a lighter note.

Large Marge from Pee Wee's big adventure gave me nightmares for a good year.

That clown scene from Pee Wee scared the shite out of me. The music and everything.

Scared the shite out of me. The fact that it was based on a true story and they never caught the guy made it even scarier to me.

Pet Cemetary. But it was not the dead pets that scared me. It was the sister with the twisted up back that freaked me out for a LONG time.

yeah she had spinal meningitis...I think they exaggerated a bit, but she freaked me out to. The movie that got to me was called David in 1988. It was not a horror movie it was a true story about a dad who burned his son. David was 6 years old and had 3rd degree burns over his whole body...years later I became best friends with the real David Rothenberg now Dave Dave. We recently had a fall out, but I still consider him my friend. He is living in Salt Lake right now.

I cant remember which Pet Cemetery it was but the one where the sister has spinal meningitis scared the shite out of me when I was a kid. I dont think I've watched it since, but that scene is seared into my nightmares forever.

Halloween

I remember watching it for the first time and being too scared to move, I was probably 8 or nine. I love it now and may be my favorite movie ever.

I was 6 or 7 but I feel the exact same way. My dad also let me watch the Exorcist that same Halloween. I had some terrible nightmares that year. Halloween is easily my favorite horror movie of all time and Exorcist is in my horror top 5.

I have never seen the original Halloween. I've never been a big fan of the slasher genre but reading all these comments about it in this thread I guess I have to see it now.

You and me both. As a kid, I lost sleep over that movie. Thing is, I never even saw it…just the trailers on TV.

Only one movie has ever scared me/affected me.

Jaws

As a kid with an absurdly overactive imagination I would always eye this one place in the house were the shadows from two adjacent doorways made a triangle, as if I wasn't careful a shadow shark would get me. If my parents werent around I would run past it because I didn't want to be next to it

Also had a metallic blue little poster thing on the wall that would spur all kinds of images in the dark. Either had to take it down, or sleep with the light on.

True for me, spare Blair Witch Project.

It touches on my only fear - the unknown - and makes an abstract fear like that come across on screen in a big way with people being taunted at night while lost in the woods. Simplicity and familiarity with the setting keeps the action on screen at a high tension that is all too real.

That's why Blair With Project, to me, is the scariest movie I have ever seen.

The Descent is a great freak out scary movie....

I cannot watch the scene when the two girls are in the small tunnel under the rock.

Well aren't you fearless. Watch Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and see if it doesn't get under your skin.
