Yes, my parents would watch this and I could be in my room, scared to death just bc I could here the theme music! I would have trouble sleeping that night.

The movies that have scared me are:

Halloween
Pet Cemetary
Texas Chainsaw
Vacancy
What Lies Beneath

This came on HBO last night. Even though I saw it in theaters at least 3 times, and then again on DVD who knows how many times, I still had to stay up til 3AM to see it yet again. Still classic!

I saw The Exorcist for the first time a few years ago, and I thought it was pretty good. But I had a hard time finding where it was scary. I don't believe in demonic possession, and this movie was based on a novel that was based on a story the guy heard. It was not "based on a true story."

I think part of it is that even with all of the make-up, Reagan still does not look scary to me. I found myself laughing at the lines like "Do you see what your cunting daughter did?" and "Let Jesus frick you" just because I didn't think she was very convincing. I liked the movie because of a great performance by Jason Miller as Father Karras and the way the demon causes him psychological torment. I've even watched this movie again twice, in my room at night with the lights out, and I go to sleep feeling like I've seen a good film rather than a gripping horror movie. Maybe you had to see it when it came out, I don't know.

I actually found some of the other Exorcist movies to be scarier, but not nearly as good as the original.

I don't necessarily agree with you about the movie; in fact, I disagree completely. But, that's not the point. If you did enjoy the Father Karras sub-plot, then I recommend you read the book. It goes much more in-depth and is really a great page-turner.

Also, on the subject of other Exorcist films: IMHO, not a single one even approached being on the same level as the original.

HOWEVER!

The following scene from Exorcist III is still one of the classic horror movie scenes of all time:

For Real?

The first 20 minutes of Jeepers Creepers are genius. The rest is pretty horrible.

The original Halloween was great because of its subtlety.

The original Last House on the Left is pretty disturbing.

Walking into the Blair Witch Project on opening night, not knowing anything about it, then hearing 20 minutes into the movie that it might be legit footage was pretty entertaining and creepy at the end. Of course, it didn't take long to realize I was being duped. So I spent the next 2 weeks convincing my friends it was real and getting them creeped out.

I like it when certain movies just end, although some people gets pissed off when a movie just ends and there was no clear understanding as to what actually happened. Just using your own imagination which can be scarier because you make up what the Blair Witch looks like as well as the ending in your own mind.

That last scene leaves an impression...it seems to just play over and over and over and over...

i agree with this

movies based on ghosts don't really scare me. sometimes they can creep me out, but that's about it

the ring kinda creeped me out, for example, but it was long gone by the end

TCM got me pretty good b/c it was just real. i was totally creeped out the first time i saw the original night of the living dead, b/c i started it at like 6pm and it was getting dark and the claustrophobia of the movie really was coming over me.

you have to really set stuff up for me psychologically, and generally if it involves the country, it will have more of an effect (b/c the country is fricking scary to me irl)

*ETA: fire in the sky was quite beastly

Excorcist
The Ring
Stephen King's It.

When I was young "It" scared the hell out of me. When georgie's picture winks it still freaks me the frick out. Too bad the ending was so ridiculous.

I've been meaning to pick up that book since I saw the movie. I've been meaning to pick up a lot of books. I don't read much anymore unfortunately.

It takes suspense to scare me in a movie. Like in that scene you linked from Exorcist III (Thought that movie was plodding and could have been a lot better, especially with George C. Scott, that scene is exceptional), I was scared shitless the first time I saw it. Not just the sudden serial killer popping out with the abrupt atmospheric music, but the whole scene leading up to it. To me, The Exorcist wasn't very suspenseful and was more about shock value. And what's happening never scares me nearly as much as not knowing what is about to happen.

Man Jeepers Creepers started off GREAT,and then yes it went quickly down hill.

I'll give my vote to Nightmare on Elm Street.

I'll throw High Tension into the same category as Jeepers Creepers, great beginning that just becomes somewhat laughable.

Oh and I'll throw Pee Wee's DISTURBING clown dream into the mix as one of the most freaky scenes in a movie. WTF is it doing in a movie like this?
