The ending is superb. The scene in the club with Ryan Gosling playing their song while we reminisce on their time together and see the life they could've had is so moving. It's so beautiful. My favorite thing on screen this year.
They both achieve their dreams, and they are instrumental in helping each other do it. Your dreams and those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities can completely change you and take you away from your friends, loved ones, family, etc. We have these moments in our life and these people in the seasons of our life that impact us in profound ways, and oftentimes they don't play a huge role down the road. Chasing your dreams often requires sacrifice, and this movie displayed it perfectly. It's not always mutually exclusive, but many times it is.
Couldn't have said it better.

Great analysis.
I usually dislike musicals and romantic dramas/comedies but the chemistry between Gosling and Stone and the realism of this movie made it work.
That final scene was perfect, true art, half of the sold-out theater (full of rich white people in their 20's to 60's) broke out in applause.
Will watch again.

reboots and rehashing of old stories, support this wonderful, ORIGINAL work of art.
It's a remake of The Notebook

I just thought everything about it worked for me. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling have great chemistry from working together in the past. The songs were great. The choreography was great. The themes it hit on were great. The pacing was good.

I loved that this movie ended with them making eye contact (also happened in Whiplash although the tone of that movie is much different). That moment Sebastian and Mia share in the club is just perfect. It's genuine and real. It's sweet. It's heartbreaking. You want them to be together, but you're happy they both got what they wanted.
I'm gonna go see it again, and I can't wait.
Saw the film tonight and you nailed it. Chazelle knows how to craft a tense, beautiful ending - and in two totally different ways.
Shocked me how much emotion I felt watching it. Love what this guy has done so far. Will now see anything he makes in the theater.

I'm 30min in and I'm gonna go ahead and proclaim this best movie of 2016
Chazelle

The movie is amazing and the fact that Chazelle's first two films are best picture nominees is ridiculous especially at 31 years old (likely best this year and arguably Whiplash deserved it) ....
I wonder if this has ever been done before

The ending was such a punch in the gut. Damn.

I like Gosling and Stone as actors, but I've been avoiding this movie because I hate musicals.

Just saw the documentary on him, so I know that Mike Nichols had his first two movies nominated for Best Picture - Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and The Graduate.

You're missing out. It's a great film.
I haven't been this emotionally affected like this by a film in a very long time. I'm still thinking about it.

Loved this movie. Loved that Ryan Gosling spent 4 months learning to play the piano and did an incredible job. He and Emma Stone were perfect.

Spot fricking on, sir.
Whiplash has been my favorite film of the last 5 or so years so I was obviously stoked about seeing this and it certainly did not disappoint.
Gosling was really good, Stone was incredible. The cinematography was as perfect as any film I've seen in quite some time. How some of these shots were pulled off blew my mind. Two movies in and Chazelle can do no wrong. Can't wait to see what he has in store for us next.

i went last night, It was absolutely charming, and won me over in a big way.
Gosling and Emma stone were fantastic. There were a few times it was a bit too "theatrical" for my tastes, but it never ruined the experience for me. There were also some really beautiful quiet moments throughout. The main theme that plays across the movie is really lovely as well. The technical skills to create this masterpiece are top notch across the board, from lighting to set design, etc. One of the better movie experiences in some time tbh.
A beautiful bitter-sweet film, to be sure. Highly recommended, and so far my favorite movie of the year, though I still need to see moonlight, manchester by the sea and 20th century women.

Absolutely love this movie. I flip flop between La la Land, Hell or High Water and Arrival for best movie of the year.

as others said, you fricking nailed it. spot on. well done, chap. bravo.
i think Chazelle is a for best director. the things he accomplished in this film are extraordinary. however, i do not believe the movie itself is the best picture. the story is extremely well executed but is something we have seen many times before. that ending might be one of the greatest though. just so well done.

The music is what really makes the film. The theme has been running through my head since I left the theater.
