Did anyone have a problem with how bad and fake it looked when the guy got stabbed in the chest at the end?

"I could use a little more morphine."

For the longest time I thought he said "I could use a little more faith." I was also pretty young when that came out and don't think I knew what morphine was

I have a great uncle/cousin type relative who saw the movie with a much younger cousin.. he was a D-Day participant and walked out during the opening battle scene.. my cousin said he remarked about it being to real for him.. he wasn't in the first waves but the most poignant part was the bodies on the beach and carnage of his fellow soldiers

Same but only because of upham's character and how he should have done anything except just sit down on the stairs. Know it's just a movie but still

I was disappointed in Opphem's character for that as well at first. Then the next few times I watched it I came to realize the directors purpose for having him do nothing was to show that not everyone was cut out to be a fighter. Real life is messy and not all the time does the hero save the day or in this instance the scene. It would have been way too cliche for him to have stormed into the tower and killed the German soldier and th been all buddy buddiy with Melesch. JMHO.

Damn this movie. It tears me to shreds.
Saw it in the theater when it came out. The scene where they storm the beach was an experience.

This.

A lot of bad asses know exactly what they would have done if they were there. Except they've never been there.

and don't forget, Upham wasn't infantry, he was a clerk with a typewriter thrust into the team only because he spoke German.

He enjoyed the role so much he reprised it twice in Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down.

It's estimated that well over 2/3rds of the men who served in front line infantry units never fired their weapons in combat. Far more men were similar to Upham than Miller.

Gen. Sam Marshall's book Men Against Fire highlights this.
