Cosplay is just women exploiting super nerds. 
I mean sure everybody wins, but it's the nerd equivalent of a strip club. And it's a little weird on both sides.

Heck, I assumed most of the good looking ones are models paid by the studios.
Although, the number of hot chicks actually liking comics and sci-fi fantasy movies / games has exploded 10000% since the 80s.
Don't let the percentage fool you since there were NO hot women in the 80s who liked sci-fi / fantasy.

On cosplay... there are so many levels to that stuff. From people that are totally into the characters they play to those that are craftsman who enjoy making costumes to people that treat it like Mardi Gras and just want to wear a costume and have a good time.
And any hooker that was ugly to the point of having to resort to cosplay to get a John would stick out like a sore thumb. The hot chicks are either paid to promote something or they're hot chicks that like the attention or they're genuine fans.

Also, the definition of hot can be relative. A chick who seems smoking to convention goers might not turn many heads on a California or Florida beach full of bikini clad beauties. I think some of the convention ladies might just enjoy being appreciated.
