People don't realize how prevalent cults were in California at that time, Satanic and otherwise.

Celebrities like Mick Jagger, Sammy Davis Jr, and Jayne Mansfield were rubbing elbows with known Satanists like Kenneth Anger and Anton Levay. Bobby Bousoleil was Anger's roommate and was going to play Lucipher in Anger's Lucipher Rising film(Jimmy Page worked on the soundtrack).

Manson used Scientology as part of his schtick. L Ron based a lot of Scientology on his time around known Occultist Jack Parsons.

The first house that the Manson family stayed at after leaving San Francisco was known as the Spiral Staircase house. When trying to find pictures of the house, I found an article that mentioned that it had belonged to a Satanic cult that was busted up by police because of pedophilia.

The whole Parsons/Hubbard/Crowley thing is so interesting.

Hubbard was clearly a con man but Parsons, without a doubt, believed in what he was doing.

That whole Babalon Working thing sounds absolutely bonkers. But when you see how much the world has changed since he was doing all of that, it's hard not to wonder if any of them worked.

I'd love to have been a fly on the wall when Hoover got the intel that their boy wonder at JPL was into all of this crazy shite.

Jet Propulsion Laboratory(some people think that it really stands for Jack Parsons Laboratory) in Pasadena. He came up with the solid based rocket fuel that made the entire space program possible(they're still using this type of fuel today, I think).

When they talk about a fine line between genius and mad men, Jack Parsons would be the poster child.

Never seen it. Where do you find the movie now? My 72YO sister saw it when she was young and it scared the hell out of them back then. I guess The Exorcist did the same for my generation.

I've been alive long enough to have had the opportunity to see if when it first came out, and goodness knows it's been on TV many, many times since then.

That said, I've never seen it from start to finish, or more than maybe 15 minutes at a time. It's one of those movies that don't interest me.

You mentioned "The Exorcist" and I saw that one in the theater when it first came out. Damn good movie, but an even better book that I read after I saw the movie.
