the poster BenchMcElroy made the following post in the American Beauty thread:

quote:

I'm going to one-up you and say Revolutionary Road was awful as well. With the possible exception of Ron Howard, Sam Mendes is the most overrated director in Hollywood.

So, is Ron Howard overrated as a director?

Some of his movies:

Angels & Demons
Frost/Nixon
The Da Vinci Code
Cinderella Man
The Missing
A Beautiful Mind
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Edtv
Ransom
Apollo 13
Far and Away
Backdraft
Parenthood
Cocoon

LINK- IMDB
(I left some off)

I'd say that he has more than his share of very popular movies. He also has had a tendency to direct movies with a bit of sappiness to them.

But there are some legitimate heavy hitters in that group: Cocoon, Apollo 13, and Cinderella Man as simply great movies.

I say he is "hit or miss" at best.

Cocoon is the only one on that list that matters.

I think he's a solid, professional director. He's actually at his best making movies about the ordinary. I think his "big" movies are a bit of reach, like Apollo 13 (and Grinch is terrible). But I like his simple approach to the "ordinary" like Parenthood and strangely enough Cocoon (its not the fantastical that works in that movie, but the old folks home).

He is also good at managing ensembles. I love The Paper, for example. I think he's a pro. He's not great, but I normally get my 8 bucks worth when I go to one of his movies.

From a movie critic's perspective, or from a movie company's perpesctive. The guy has hardly made any "duds". That list is very inclusive.

I'd say he's been exceptionally consistent, rather than "hit ot miss". You either like his style, or you don't.

I think he is solid, but has had the luck of some great stories.

It all starts with the story first. IMO.

Yeah, he really did nail it. I was worried the movie would suck after watching the other NASA movie, (I forgot the name), but he was able to keep it interesting and exciting, and the characters were developed.

Not to belittle his work...but the story was solid going into it.

He's a good director though.

I think Howard is a great director. I've seen most of his movies, and I don't get how someone wouldn't like him.

Ron Howard is a mediocre director. I just hate his heavy handedness, the blandness, the cheesiness and the overly sentimentality quality to all of his films. Throw in the fact that this guy has more Oscar nominations and wins for best director than Paul Thomas Anderson and Christopher Nolan and yeah, I say he's pretty overrated.

I enjoyed Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13, Far and Away. There are some others of his I like, but the majority I do not care for.

I don't see the fascination with Ransom.

To be fair to Ronnie, his career peaked as Opie.

I can agree with this....

Um...yeah ok.

Like him or not, that's pretty ridiculous.

Since Revolutionary Road was great, anything he says after making that asinine statement is moot.

This. He delivers a movie with appeal to the average human being that only sees the surface. He's not innovative, the most creative, or earth shattering director but he can deliver a product that makes money b/c the average movie goer is his target on every project.

Maybe some of the movies were overrated, but his work seems spot on with everything. He is one of the few directors who can work incident free with Russell Crowe, so that means he must be pretty good at managing the set.

Understanding sarcasm fail.

Everyone knows his career peaked as Richie Cunningham.
