Howard is obviously a very successful director with an Academy Award for Best Director and Best Picture to his credit along with a long list of popular movies. No, I would not say he is overrated.

YES. He's like Clint Eastwood as a director: He could film poop steaming on a girl's chest and it will still garner Oscar buzz. His movies are ok at best.

Damn man, Eastwood is a good director, too. Maybe you just don't like his world view, or something. What about Unforgiven and Mystic River did you think qualified as a "steaming pile of poop"?

At least Clint Eastwood has the masterpiece Unforgiven to fall back on. Ron Howard has nothing.

I don't think Turkey Burger is in tune with many of us on this board.

Don't get me wrong, Turk. I love ya, but judging from your Top 10, we do not have the same taste in movies.

He, like Eastwood, has done a couple of better than good movies, but yeah overall, both are generally just empty Oscar nods more than anything else. I love Unforgiven, but outside of that Eastwood is bland.

I'd disagree there High Plains Drifter is a great western. A Perfect World, The Eiger Sanction and Play Misty for Me are all pretty underrated IMO.

Genius. Love this movie. Did he direct Outlaw Josey Wales? I don't feel like looking it up.

Is Ron Howard an innovative, ground-breaking director? No. He does not re-invent the wheel. Ron Howard's talent lies in the fact he realizes the wheel is a great damn invention.

To be overrated, don't you have to be endlessly fawned over by people?

I hardly ever hear anyone mention his name in discussions of the best directors of our time.

I think he is rated about where he should be. A competent director. Not great but also very rarely bad.

I'd say everything post-Unforgiven is mediocre. Eastwood's resume before then is loaded with incredible movies whether he directed or just starred.

This is a better assessment of Eastwood...

I always forget that he directed HPD and Play Misty for Me

I get where you are coming from. I spent a year or so on this facebook movie group (now defunct) with a group of self-proclaimed movie elitists that called themselves the Celluloid Sodomites and they talked often about obscure art films and the like. They exposed to me a whole hidden world of films and because of that I just have a slightly different viewpoint on the medium.

I'm sure we like the same movies, but I'm just more inclined to praise a movie like Dead Ringers before I praise The Godfather.

I imagine the movies on your list are excellent. I've just never seen any of them. The only one I've ever heard of is Dead Ringers.

The greatest thing Ron Howard has ever associated himself with is Arrested Development. I enjoy some of his movies, but they all fall short of being great.
