Rocky IV: Rocky v Drago…Spoilers

Went and saw it last night, and having experienced the original in theaters when it first premiered both my buddy and I turned to each other with the same thought at the end—Stallone butchered the hell out of this.
We both understood what he was going for from the pre-movie introduction and the scenes that were added, but the experience he was trying to present, the movie with more soul than ‘80s flash fell flat.
It is obvious that Sly hates his ex-wife, Bridgette Nielsen. Ninety-nine percent of her work from the original cut is gone. He may as well have digitally erased her from the remaining scenes that she was in. The main issue here is that while her contribution was drastically reduced, Drago didn’t really have much extra that helped it to payoff. The East versus West, Cold War feeling is almost neutered. That plays out throughout the movie, but mostly so at the end where Rocky’s end speech is altered and the Russian premier, instead of standing and leading his fellowmen in applause, angrily storm out.
Surprisingly, all three montage sequences survive, though somewhat altered, but Rocky Jr. Only gets the one speech scene, which has been enhanced as well. The robot is scrapped entirely, which means we don’t see the kids at the end watching the fight on TV, which tells you partially why the end scene, including the music, was altered.
Won’t go into too many technical aspects here, but will say it was bizarre to see some camera angles that were used, color correction was poor at times, and audio/visual weren’t always synced…especially in the James Brown sequence.
I know that I have 35 years of history with the original cut, and maybe that’s too long, but this new cut just didn’t work for an ‘80s kid and someone who genuinely enjoyed Rocky Balboa and the Creed entries into the universe for the most part.

Wait, what? I was prepared to come in here and laugh at you for the "spoilers" tag for Rocky IV, but then I read the thread and apparently it was re-released and heavily edited. What the frick? I honestly had no idea this was even a thing.
What was wrong with Rocky IV that it needed the George Lucas treatment?
And what the frick is this:
Did he edit it to where Rocky doesn't end the fricking Cold War? That's blasphemy to the highest degree.

I had no idea this was a thing, but now I'm intrigued
I read that the Apollo vs Drago fight was much better in this cut. Is that true?
The robot was the silliest thing about IV, so I can see why that got cut

I feel no need to see this. You can't improve upon perfection. Simply a money-grab by Stallone and nothing more.

pretty much everything you said.
WTF?

No surprise there. Stallone's falling out with the robot was pretty public, as was the robot's career deterioration to Penthouse and eventually hardcore porn.

Did you stand for the Soviet anthem?

Saw the original in the theater. Never forget the crowd rising to their feet in the last 2 rounds literally cheering Rocky on like it was a real fight. Crowd roared when he knocked out Drago.

Basically. The, "I can change" speech was basically changed to reflect Rocky and Apollo's need to change their mentality as warriors and not reflective of Cold War attitudes. It was just bizarre.

Better in what sense? There were certainly different angles and takes used, but it really felt like Apollo's wife's concern was minimized. The shotgun sound effect for punches was drastically reduced, which made it more realistic.

No, but I will maintain that the old Soviet Union National Anthem from a musical and emotional standpoint without understanding the language is probably one of the best to ever exist.

There were some people actually clapping during the final fight, but it really felt like it was more nostalgic than in the moment.

Well, we did witness the robot transition from male to female back in 1985. So, the signs were there early on.

that it was longer and felt more like a real fight, in that Apollo took it more seriously in the beginning

If they are gonna edit a Rocky, then delete V completely.

And what if Stallone doesn't? Are you gonna sue him?

Again, the whole "can't turn this off like a radio" is played up more in this regard. Honestly, it felt like the fight was a lot quicker to me.

In the live pre-movie introduction, he flat out said that Rocky V did not work.

I don't recall seeing this posted. 90+ minute inside look at Stallone and his thought process behind the director's cut.

All of this sounds awful.

I go back to that film as I do many 80's movies not because they were magnificent films but because of the nostalgia.
