Yeah, his character nailed McBride's delivery.
I'm not understanding any complaints about a lack of humor in this episode. There was plenty to laugh at, it just got overshadowed by some surprising (-ly good, as well) drama.

that episode was way up there in terms of dramatizing actual on the ground armed combat. It would not surprise me in the least if it’s the most historically accurate depiction of civil war fighting I will ever watch
the tracking shot of the ambush (from the grey point of view the whole time) was masterful filmmaking

it was wonderfully done
It was a real personal journey as well ,, the songs they used were poingnent
the spiritual easter eggs,,
Im sure some with think it corney but I could tell Danny is/was a PK both reverent and irreverent, but still respectful

Great episode and I like the change in direction for an episode. No more of them growing up though hopefully this season, can’t stand the kid actors
Also I like how Gemstone was always telling them what they wanted to hear prior to passing even though he was a giant piece of shite to start. There was some good and righteousness to him from the beginning that evolved well over time.

had to watch it again
the minister at the chapel is Eugene from the walking dead LOL
McBride has done a few interviews…the episode was filmed in 10 days, all outside and mostly during daylight (so very weather dependent). Cooper had never seen the show before

Just caught up. Wow did not expect that episode but pleasantly surprised.
Battle scenes were shockingly well done and the ending was pretty powerful.
Big props to Danny McBride that seemed like a big risk but I loved the episode.
It made me do a little digging on if the Confederate Major Mcfall sp? was based on a real person. It appears it was based off Major Lafayette McLaws - Wiki Link

Yeah that was obviously different but exceptionally well done and plenty of dark humor.
Laughing at the view that, that episode was some kind of cheap filler. That was highly likely the most expensive episode of the entire series so far

My God, I had to pause the episode cause I was laughing so hard at Baby Billy. Balls clear down to his knees.

Same. As soon as he said “Y’all better learn them jetpacks” I lost my shite.
Such a ridiculous sentence when you think about it. Perfect for a Danny McBride show.

HBO is leading the charge in penile prosthetics. Seems like every show has a link of boudin.

Eli on the boat with all the caps, nice nod to revenge of the nerds with his old Atoms cap

Makes me wonder how many other Easter eggs there has been.

I'm wondering if all of the hats are nods to parts of his IRL or previous shows he's been on.
The hat next to it is a Sutton's Drug Store hat (in Chapel Hill). Goodman had a show called Alpha House where he was a retired UNC basketball coach.
I wonder if the red hat above the Atoms cap is a Southwest Missouri State hat (where he went to college, had a football scholarship)?

Happened to pull this thread up when Eli was on the boat.
There’s also a couple of Yankees hat. He played Babe Ruth in “The Babe”
