Also I'm so tired of hearing about George Lucas.

I've liked two movies he actually directed...A New Hope and American Graffiti.

And his best work, is not even his work. It's just his guidelines, the general story...but he didn't write the dialogue or direct the movie Empire Strikes Back.
That's why it's so good.

George Lucas should thank his lucky stars that the world became enamored with Star Wars. Otherwise he's just that THX guy.

He turned out to be the most successful filmmaker that didn't really make films except for a few that people liked and a few that people hated.

George is about money. He's not a great filmmaker. Disney sucks but he sold it to them for a ridiculous amount of money...because that's what he wants...money.

So him calling out the TLJ (which sucks) as a soulless money-grab is the pot calling the kettle black.

The prequels at least had a pretty good overarching theme and story—Anakin is powerful but deeply flawed, Jedi are self-absorbed and blind, Palpatine is a cunning politician Sith lord—it was just horribly executed and poorly acted. A better director and someone telling Lucas no would have pulled those off.

Conversely, the sequels were well acted and beautifully shot, but they had no semblance of a cohesive story or narrative whatsoever.

That pretty much hits the nail on the head. Lucas is actually very good at coming up with story arcs but he wasn't so good at pulling them off later in his career. Which isn't a surprise. By the time he made the prequels he'd effectively been retired as a director for close to two decades.

Let him come up with the idea and then have someone else carry it across the finish line. It worked with the Clone Wars series.

You're not wrong.

Also, he's not wrong.

and they made 1/2 of it back in 1 movie...... Think about that. If lucas was just about the money he could have made that 4 billion in 2 movies.

Look, I wasn’t crazy about the prequels, I thought RotS was pretty good. Not great.

The sequel trilogy has made me appreciate the prequels.

All 3 of the prequels are really bad, but at least they had a coherent story arc

Even the fricking guy that cant direct knows that film is shite.

Just wanted to pop in and give my obligatory TLJ is a pile of shite with character arcs that make no sense and was made by a director that loves thinking he's the smartest guy in the room. frick you always Rian.

TLJ is what happens when you let little woke boys who are hell bent on social justice and diversity only run things.

The prequels were just unending drudgery. My kids were at the age when they came out to get into Star Wars. I liked the originals so I was glad to take them (to the first one, anyway). I fell asleep in 2 of the 3 and don't remember a single plot point from any of them. When you guys discuss the prequels on here, it's like I never actually have seen them. That's how little of an impression they made on me. Just an unrelenting borefest.

They’re not bad because the storylines are bad. They’re bad because the cgi looks terrible, the dialogue is cringe-inducing, the pacing is all over the place (especially in AOTC), the foreshadowing is so heavy handed that it’s more like telegraphing, and the acting is awful almost across the board outside of Obi Wan.

You should rewatch Episode III. It’s not a goid movie and is fundamentally flawed like all the prequels, but it is still extremely entertaining. It’s the only prequel I occasionally have the desire to rewatch.

As was said, its really mostly the dialogue and acting (although dialogue is really the issue). Lucas needed an editor and director that had a spine and the prequels could have been much much better. He also should have trimmed a lot of things and made more of it like the third film. Where he started was suspect.

And have I mentioned the dialogue sucked?

Because he himself has had such a great track record at reviving the series.

I hate when creators (GRRM is another good example) shite on what someone did with "their" series when they essentially sold it away and set it up to be manipulated to their dissatisfaction. Don't like it? Don't be a greedy bastard and sell the rights away. They sure aren't bitching when they cash that check.

Most folks are about that coin, so this isn't a criticism.

quote:

He's not a great filmmaker.

This isn't fair - he was the brains being Lucasfilm and even before that, American Graffiti. As the head of a collaborative team of talented folks who would challenge him, elevate him (as he elevated them), he was an excellent filmmaker - not an auteur or true artist, but film as commerce, great popcorn films (don't forget his involvement with Indiana Jones). The fact he went completely to shite after the OT and the three canon Indiana Jones films doesn't make me forget that run from American Graffiti to The Last Crusade. (And I liked Willow, just FTR.)

But, since around 1990, he can't be considered more than mediocre. On that point, I'm sure we can agree.
