I recently finished watching Twin Peaks: The Return and looks like I'll be going down the Lynch rabbit hole for the next couple of weeks and I want to watch some more of his movies that I haven't seen before. Which one should I go with ?

Inland Empire
Blue Velvet
Lost Highway

I've already seen Mulholland Drive, which was great. Of these three what seems to be better one?

I actually downloaded Inland Empire to my phone already. It's the weakest of the three? Worth watching at all?

Blue Velvet is his masterpiece (ok, I'll listen to Mulholland Drive arguments). It's great. Dive deep, and enjoy.

They are all absolutely worth watching - that is just my ranking. I'm a lynch nut so I'm kinda biased, but you should enjoy all 3 if you liked Mulholland

Blue Velvet or the elephant man. Wild at heart is also very good.

Lost Highway is my favorite Lynch film, but Blue Velvet is also greatness. It's just not as "out there" as most of his work. But I think all of his movies are worth watching.

Honestly, I never got around to watching Inland Empire. I'll get there eventually.

BV is weird AF, but on a good day, I think it's Lynch's best.

Lost Highway is weird AF (see the pattern?) and I get what he was trying to do, but it just misses a little bit here and there. I would still say watch it, but watch Blue Velvet first - it has arguably Dennis Hopper's best performance. If that doesn't pique your interest, I don't know what will.

Lynch doesn't approve it seems.

and Elephant Man don't really count to me. Don't get me wrong, I think they're both fantastic stand-alone films and refute the notion that Lynch would have had trouble directing Empire (he was Lucas' first choice, by the way) - he was working with other folks' material in those.

But, to get the full on Lynchian "strange" you need his original material. For that you need Twin Peaks (various formats) or his "all Lynch" features:

Eraserhead
Blue Velvet
Twin Peaks
Lost Highway
Mulholland Drive
Inland Empire

Now, he did not produce all of those and he did write the script for other films, Dune, Elephant Man, Wild at Heart, but these latter 3 films were based on other original works, not original or compilation stories by Lynch himself. The core six films (plus Twin Peaks series) are the pure, distilled Lynchian experience.

You see, Lynch had to make his own movies - they were too strange/inaccessible for anyone else to make them.

I like Blue Velvet the most after Mulholland drive. I found Eraserhead hard to watch even though it was only 90 minutes. I didn't think Wild at Heart was all that special either.

I liked Lost Highway too. Although I thought it was harder to follow than Mulholland Drive. Never got to see Inland Empire which is apparently the craziest of them all.

Though not as deranged as his other movies, I think Zodiac is a near perfect film. It's just not what you think of when you think of Lynch.

I recognize BV as the "superior" film however slightly (Hopper's performance alone probably enough), but I have a soft spot for Mulholland Drive - the sheer depth of the movie - Lynch's poisoned love letter to Hollywood is a work of art -a thing of beauty - much, much better every time I watch it.

No question, but honestly, the tension built in BV makes it extremely difficult, too. At least Eraserhead had the dignity of being all bizarre, all the time - those touches of normalcy in Blue Velvet - the superficially familiar plot - make the other parts all the more tense.

I need to have my mind clear - perhaps after we have a Pythonathon weekend this Fall, I'll pop it in. True story (copied from the wiki):

quote:

In an NPR interview, Laura Dern recounted a conversation she had with one of the movie's new producers. He asked if Lynch was joking when he requested a one-legged woman, a monkey and a lumberjack by 3:15. "Yeah, you're on a David Lynch movie, dude," Dern replied. "Sit back and enjoy the ride." Dern reported that by 4 p.m. they were shooting with the requested individuals.

Maybe because it's a David Fincher film? It co-stars John Carroll Lynch (no relation).

Read "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Bierce or you can watch the Twilight Zone episode here.

Then watch Lost Highway.

Helps the movie make a lot more sense.
