Realistically how was it even possible for Waingro to escape Neil in Heat?

Watched this masterpiece last night and that scene outside the diner alway didn’t sit right with me. 3 guys covering the corners in the parking lot and Neil right on top of you with a gun just seems impossible for someone to escape that scenario without being notice by somebody.

He crawled under the cars then a cop pulled up. Btw Saw Waingro on Banshee the other day.

Hardened criminal/seriel killer. Rats survive!

Fun fact: The Waingro actor Kevin Gage was married to Kelly Preston in the 80's.

Movie was ruined at the end. Neil was far too disciplined to not escape when he had the chance just to go get revenge on Waingro. He could have disappeared for a bit and still have all the time in the world to come back for Waingro at some point.

Yep, 85-87
Did 3 years in real life for growing weed 03 to 06.
Neal's girlfriend was so shook up afterwards she became a Judge

Agreed. The action did not fit the character. He could have paid somebody to kill Waingro after he left the country. Anyway, Ammy Brenneman ended up with a sweet ride!

Pretty much
It would have gone from a great movie to an all time movie. Especially since Pacino's train wreck personal life demonstrated he didn't have the consistency of discipline necessary to compete at the highest level.
I felt like they broke the character just to force a good guy wins outcome.

Neil spends the entire movie breaking his own code. He built his persona and protected his own ego by claiming to follow these rules but at the end of the day he’s human and all his human greed, ego, and love make him completely forgoe his code
If he was as disciplined as he or you claim, he would’ve stopped when he saw detective Hannah was onto him. He also would’ve never had such a vulnerability like Chris on his squad and he never would’ve taken out that lady who’s asking him about his book about metals. At the end of the day he’s just as human and unprincipled as the heavies he employed.

Not gonna lie. I was pulling for Neil to win the shootout at the end.
Also, I agree that the ending was the weakest part of the movie. It was out of character for Neil to chance trying to kill Waingro. This is the guy who always preached walking away when the heat was on.
I have Heat 2 on my Kindle, I just haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

I’m surprised Gage didn’t do more, he seemed like a good actor.
Who and what?

Disagree it ruined the movie, but yeah, I really wanted Neil to escape
