Its a solid movie. The book is somewhat entertaining...but damn is the author a total weirdo. Its a great premise with a great story...with the author doing his best to make you hate it the whole time

I loved the book the first time I read/listened to it. On the second and third time through it became more apparent Wade was kinda a creep and crappy person and it became harder to enjoy. One thing about the movie is Wade is a much more likable character.

I had the same experience. Listened on audiobook. Wade is a narcissistic a-hole as is Artemis. It is beyond impossible that he has read and watched all that material. The author clearly didnt have a lot of experience with women and it showed in the writing.

Despite all that...in a weird way, its still enjoyable. Sometimes you just strike gold with a story so unique and good that it can survive borderline insufferable writing.

I really, truly hate being "that guy" but I will begrudgingly do it here...but the book is SO much better IMO. I'm nto even a video game guy exactly but I'd heard great things about the title so I read the book and loved the hell out of it. As soon as I was done I couldn't wait to watch the movie but man it wa sa let down comparatively. Not bad at all mind you, just not near the level of the book.

If you enjoy reading at all, I would highly recommend checking out the book too and see all the differences form the movie.

I havent seen the movie.

But with the book.....it was fun, but the writing itself was rough for me. The author is a much better story teller than writer.

First book was great, second was putrid. It got me into LitRPG.

I get the people saying the kid was a kind of a creep, but it makes sense as he was kind of a nerd coming from a broken family.

I think I may be the only person who disliked the book. The authors 80s obsession and all the references I found super tiresome.

One thing in the movie that was silly was how the players would enter the game environment in a lobby and then walk to an individual game. I realize it was a device to show the characters having conversations but no gamer is going to take the time to walk around, even if it is an avatar.

One thing in the book that is not shown in the movie is travel costs money. Teleporting can be done through hubs, but it's very expensive and it's a massive galaxy of player and company built planets. You can also travel by ship for cheaper and you have to pay fuel costs, but it takes longer.

There isn't a hub/lobby world like shown in the movie.

They writer is good at developing ideas, but he is a pretty shite writer. A lot of writing reads like bad fan fiction, especially in the second book. He needs a much better editor to clean a lot of that shite up.
