How can anyone call a CGI animation scene on of the "most amazing 5 mins of movie history?" Sure it was a fun scene that was well designed and animated, but to put this above actually filmed phenomenal car chase scenes such as French Connection is ridiculous.

Considering the fact that I almost walked out of the theater during that scene, I don’t see how it’s in the debate for even the Top 1000 scenes ever.

I agree that the scene is not anywhere in the ballpark of most amazing in movie history.

But to give CGI as the reason is just dumb.

The only way it works is if no one had ever won the race, ever. Then people would have been aiming for that first.

I agree, though, that if a race had not been won after than many attempts, then someone would have probably thought, "Not going to win anyway, let's see what happens when I go backwards."

As someone who races frequently online, it would have been one of the first things someone did. It absolutely makes no sense. Trolls are trolls. This movie was made by people who barely have any knowledge in gaming.

The book is a fun idea. But it is really....poorly written.

It just is. I reads like fan fiction. Or a book someone would post online back in the day free to read.

It is a fantastic movie, the only people that seemed to not like it were the people who read the book but that seems to be a recurring theme.

Ernest Cline was one of the screenwriters though.

I saw the movie prior to reading the book, but after I read it I was surprised how much he bastardized his own story. I get that there were things that had to change due to licensing issues or that just wouldn't translate well to the big screen. A death race instead of a game of Joust against a lich makes sense for a blockbuster movie.

But it taking years for someone to try going backwards in a car race is dumb. I say "F it" and start going the wrong way pretty much every time I spin out in a racing game. Someone would have figured it out early on.

I find it hard to believe that someone who is clearly as knowledgeable and passionate about gaming as Cline is would allow that into the script.

Yes, because every race car driver ever has always thrown it in reverse if he didn’t win the previous race. Mario Andretti was famous for his “Jam it in reverse and floor it!” Wins.

You are trying to come across as intelligent and missing badly.

He solved it by picking up a tiny clue in a conversation.

I never read the book. It's always best to treat movies and books as two separate entities, as much as possible.

This is a really dumb comparison. Andretti isn't a gamer, playing a video game.

Try again.

It’s a fricking game. A video game where physics can be played with. This isn’t the Indy 500 where someone is basically guaranteed to cross the finish line just by going forward. If no one was beating the Indy 500 for 5 years, you don’t think at least one driver would think to themselves “How about I try the other way”?

Dude, someone with down syndrome could figure that out. It’s not being intelligent, it’s just any common sense whatsoever. Again, even the idiots from Idiocracy could have figured that out.

And no one else could figure that out after over 5 years in that corporation with tens of thousands of employees? It’s just retarded to try and justify this.

I just think it’s non-stop fan service that doesn’t make any logical sense to anyone that understands gaming or the internet. The only part of the movie I actually liked was the Shining scene, and admittedly that’s not only because I’m a big Shining fan, but also Spielberg understands the Shining and makes that scene work. Like everyone in the plot lives in Columbus Ohio? What are the chances of that? Virtually zero? And it’s just so unimaginative over what it could have been. Forget the licensing rights, we really just see a race, a library, a nightclub, the Overlook Hotel, and Hoth as scenes in this virtual world. Sorry, Ready Player One drives me kind of insane since it’s a great concept that just fricks everything up.

Well, the solution is simple then, don't fricking watch it.

I haven’t watched it since watching it in theaters. I just think the story really sold itself short and halfassed things in the name of fan service. And no I haven’t read the book, but would like another movie like this but more in the themes of say Blade Runner or Children of Men. It used “Pure Imagination” as its theme and all it did was put in pop culture BS and completely fail to live up to that hype.

I try my best to do this.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was an awesome (in my opinion) movie... But butchered the book. I still love the movie.

I liked the first two Dan Brown movies... Changed a lot from the book, but still enjoyed them.

While Ready Player One was beautiful on scene, the movie sucked. I didn't like the changes it made. I will say this though. We are talking about the Racing scene, but the ABSOLUTELY nailed the dance scene with everyone dancing while floating. That was beautiful on scene and also pretty close to the books description.

No, he went to the library for that developer guy and looked at one of his past conversations where he talked about winning a race going in reverse. That’s where he got the idea.
