Well, a secondary theory I had was that the movie was originally intended to take place in the 80s, with the references to the 1960s were inserted in post-production because the producers thought they needed to give the movie a “nostalgic” feel.

The movie seemed pretty clear that it took place in 1963.

Best scene was the hungry eyes montage.

Nope. Best scene is when they sleep together and she says, "Dance with me, Johnny." Well I don't remember if she says Johnny. That scene is one of my top 10 sexiest scenes in a movie.

Youtube - Family Guy spoof

I do, because I'm her father, and she's 16.
What are you, like 38?

Forty-one.

Btw, this may have been Patrick Swayze's most realistic role. His mom ran a dance studio in Houston, and I've read that all the girls who took classes there loved her cool son who could dance.

They had great chemistry. They didn’t like each other irl, but that’s how the movie starts out. Swayze was annoyed by her. But underneath there was an attraction. Brilliant casting job. They picked up on that in auditions I’m sure.

It’s crazy to think Swayze may have ended up playing college football had he not injured his knee. He was actually barely able to finish this movie because of his knee.

ETA: I know way more about this movie than I want to.

Doesn't he adjust the mirror on the car so he can watch her change in the back seat? He raped her with his eyes.

IIRC, they got along awesome at first but then eventually wore on each other and hated each other. And then the director pulled them aside and showed them their audition videos to show them how much chemistry they had initially, and after that they got back to getting along and finished the movie strong.

My understanding was that they did not get along at first and had issues while filming Red Dawn. So much so that Jennifer Grey did not want to work with Swayze. But maybe this was before filming.

Jennifer Grey’s perm and many of the hairstyles are not that out of place. As far as the clothing, it doesn’t quite fit the 80s, but it wouldn’t be out of place for preppy, upper class New Yorkers vacationing in the Catskills to wear retro 1960s clothing in the 80s.

The one aspect that torpedos my theory is that the illegality of the abortion is kinda central to the plot, and it wouldn’t make sense to Penny to be seeking an illegal abortion in the 1980s New York.

You're also overlooking the fact that it took place during the heyday of the Borscht Belt summer resorts, which were pretty much over in the 80s.
