I have lost one of my all-time favorites. Can only find summaries or complete transcripts, no videos or clips.

Was a real old one, during the Ford administration, the WH press secretary guest hosted.

One skit was

quote:

fake commercial parody of Smucker’s “With a name like Smucker’s it’s got to be good” ad campaign that proposes even more stomach-churning names like Nose Hair, Death Camp, Dog Vomit, Monkey Puss, Painful Rectal Itch, Mangled Baby Ducks, 10,000 Nuns and Orphans, All Eaten by Rats and finally a mystery jam with a name so disgusting that you can’t say it on television.

The whole episode was great. They had the Bass-O-Matic too

Thanks to everyone for this thread... I swear it has had me laughing my arse off.

I'll add a few...

(This one is probably the only time I've found Melissa McCarthy funny)

That’s the official death of SNL, in an episode where Dave Chapelle of all people was hosting. The opening sketch is obvious: Chapelle as Obama welcoming Trump to the White House.

Granted maybe Baldwin refused to come in that night, but this? If Belushi, Farley, Norm, or even Eddie Murphy were on the cast, they would have absolutely crashed that sketch live.

SOOO many great ones in this thread. Really hard to pick just one. Celebrity Hot Tub. Black Jeopardy. Toonces the Driving Cat.

But if I had to pick just one, it'd be Steve Martin and the King Tut skit. I was living in New Orleans during this era and the King Tut exhibit was coming to town. When I first saw this, I was literally crying with laughter.

wtf were they thinking? It’s supposed to be a comedy show. And they open with basically a tribute to a politician who lost an election?

The episode itself was great because of Chappelle. But from then on out, the cast and writers could no longer carry the show consistently. It relied heavily on a good host for any future show to be worth a shite.

A tribute? They acted as if it were 9/11 or worse. It was the most ridiculous opening that they could have done.

The history of Vaudeville. SNL won’t put this one on YouTube. I still quote the “…..we must be French, French, FRENCH!” Part regularly.

The Old Glory Insurance has a story behind it too.

Sam Waterson wasn't hosting that week or anything; he was called in specifically to do the commercial. He thought about how you get those types of gigs as actors, and how they would be read and went right into that "I'm doing this for a paycheck" mode and it was just perfect. I also love that no one in the commercial was part of the cast - it was done entirely without SNL members (so who knows how much time went between filming it and airing it).

Side note:

There is now an actual Old Glory Insurance located in Texas. I'm very tempted to call them to file a claim for a robot attack...

These threads are fun because it often "dates" the posters. You know, generally, how old a poster is by the era of his/her favorite skits.

Also glad to see all of my favorites have already been posted:

Male synchronized swimming
Old Glory Insurance
Schmidts Gay Beer
The Clarence Thomas hearing
King Tut (Some time in the early 80's a few years after Martin performed the song on SNL our family and family friends made it the theme of a Mardi Gras float. We performed the song in front of the judge's table)

Even though he is a huge douchebag in real life and the Trump presidency completely destroyed his brain, Alec Baldwin is on of the best guest hosts in the history of the program. He as fruity Charles Nelson Riley and Ferrell nailing the weird James Lipton is one of my favorites Baldwin did.
