Pixar Plan A New Film Every Year, A Sequel Every Other Year

Pixar’s president Ed Catmull:

I haven't seen Monsters Univ yet but I like that he's focused on being more consistent with original films.
A sequel every 2 years though? That still seems like a lot. Some of Pixars films don't really feel very sequelable.

Well Pixar's best 3 films are part of a trilogy (and arguably the best film trilogy of all time), so there's that.
I know that Finding Dory is on the docket for 2016, but what other properties are they looking at? Hopefully The Incredibles - in all of their Fantastic Four ripoff glory - are one of them.

Does that even matter anymore? If the brand has any marketability, they will sequel it until it loses money. That is a much safer business model than risking hard earned money on something "new" that has to build its brand up from square 1.

Pixar needs to start bringing their A-game again.

Monsters U was A game. They should have done wreck it Ralph and let Disney have the princess tale in Brave, but HoM gonna do whatever it wants to do

They have the Death Star now.

Agreed. Ralph felt more Pixar than Disney (basically the same concept as Toy Story but with video games). Brave seems more like Disney.
I don't really like this plan though. If you have a really good idea for a sequel, go for it, but how many of Pixar's movies can really have sequels? I guess a Bug's Life, another Cars (a basic certainty), Finding Nemo (a complete certainty), and The Incredibles (one I'm all for), but that's it. I don't see where you can take any of the other universes they've created.

Maybe they will drop some sequels to their upcoming originals. Their next sequel is Finding Dory so I'm guessing their next sequel after that will be in 2018. Will probably be The Incredibles. Brad Bird finishes with Tomorrowland production next spring so he'll be available after that.

People can shite on sequels all they want but I would love an Incredibles sequel.

Always thought they should have made it a tv series and slowly have the kids age. Do a movie every 3-4 years or so. But what do I know?

So if I'm seeing this:
..correctly, that means one new film every year, and every other year we get a new film plus a sequel? Or the sequels would also count as "new Pizar films"?
I assume the latter, with one Pixar film out per year, but it's oddly worded.

I believe this is the case as Finding Dory and Inside Out or whatever its called will come out in July and Nov of the same year.

I'd be cool with Incredibles/Toy Story sequels.
But Up & WALL-E should definitely be left alone.
EDIT: Actually nevermind, I like the way the Toy Story series ended.

If a sequel is done well, (Godfather II, Rocky II, Terminator 2, The Wrath of Kahn), I got no problems with it.
Many true "trilogies" have a pretty good second (and in some cases, third) installment (original Star Wars, Back to the Future, LOTR).
However, most sequels fall into the "Hey! This brand has great appeal. Let's get a sequel out there, and any efforts to make it a quality film or put forth the care and effort that made the original film so appealing be damned!" (...and I'm looking really hard at you, Caddyshack 2 and Ghostbusters 2).
Ditto for reboots. Re "cash ins" would be more accurate. Ditto for making a movie out of an old television show - in almost all cases just a crass grab for cash (although I will admit that the Brady Bunch movie made me rethink that.)

Wreck it Ralph was really good. I was very impressed.

Up and Wall-E were 2008 and 2009. That's not that long for an animation studio. Brave was LAST YEAR. Films take a long time to make. I do feel like the Golden Age of Pixar has come to a close, but they still put out quality films that I enjoy.
And screw all y'all. Brave was awesome.

I liked Brave, too. I thought it was fairly well done. Somebody tried to do something new and different, anyway.
(I would also like to see a well-done Incredibles sequel.)

Hold up...Ghostbusters 2? You're hating on some Ghostbusters 2?? It's only one of the greatest sequels of all time. No big deal.
Also, I agree with the Wreck-It-Ralph sentiments in this thread...definitely felt like a Pixar movie, and was easily as good as at least half of Pixar's list. Really great movie.
